The Seattle Mariners (61-53) take on the Chicago White Sox (42-71) in to close out the MLB’s late slate on Wednesday night. After the home-team M’s took game one of this series last night, they look to follow it up and keep the offense on track in tonight’s follow-up.

The Mariners are far and away the superior team in this contest, both in terms of overall talent and record on the year. They loaded up at the Trade Deadline and added Eugenio Suarez and Josh Naylor, and they’ve won three of four contests since those additions joined the team with 21 runs in that span.
Their offensive numbers aren’t spectacular since the All-Star Game with the worst batting average in baseball and fourth-lowest OPS in that span, but they’ve won 10 of 18 games over the same sample. Meanwhile, the White Sox are 10-6 since the ASG with the offense on an improbably-good hot streak given the lineups they deploy — their offense boasts the fourth-most runs, fourth-best batting average and third-highest OPS.
Tonight’s matchup on the mound sees George Kirby (4.13 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 74 SO) battle Jonathan Cannon (4.77 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 75 SO). This pair of right-handers enter in very different form as Kirby posted a 2.61 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over his last seven starts with just 28 hits and 12 earned runs allowed in 41.1 innings. Cannon’s recent numbers don’t look as good with a 5.88 ERA and 1.51 WHIP, albeit in a smaller sample of 33.2 innings.

DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Mariners as strong -272 favorites on the Moneyline, the best odds of any team to win outright tonight. The White Sox come in at +216 to win outright with the run total set at just 7.5.
Seattle won yesterday’s outing 8-3 and tallied 11 hits to Chicago’s five. It was a convincing victory that came about despite Cal Raleigh and Randy Arozarena each going hitless on the evening, so better play from either of those two should provide an extra bump in offensive output. Kirby’s also the far better pitcher of these two starters, so the Mariners see an advantage there as well.
While the White Sox have played well since the ASG, this Cinderella run won’t continue forever. The Mariners simply have too much firepower across the board, so I’m rolling with SEA -1.5.
