Alyssa Thomas More Than 31.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists
Only one player in WNBA history can boast of having back-to-back triple-doubles: Alyssa Thomas. She just accomplished that feat for the third time in her career. Now Thomas has a chance to make it three straight against the Fever, and I like her chances.
In their last matchup just a week ago, Thomas had her biggest statistical output of the season. Phoenix’s superstar racked up a season-high 32 points, another season high with 15 rebounds, and seven assists on top of that. Indiana boasts a good defense, but few are a match for AT when she’s in engine mode. Averaging 19 points, 11.8 rebounds, and eight assists over her last six, it’s going to be another big night for Thomas.
Tina Charles Less Than 16.5 Points
It’s been a great season for the 36-year-old Charles despite her team’s struggles. The former MVP and all-time WNBA rebounding leader has still got it, providing consistent paint scoring and rebounding. But that just got a lot more difficult against the Los Angeles Sparks now that Cameron Brink is back in the fold.
Though not playing her full complement of minutes yet, she’s putting up three blocks per game in only 14 minutes per game. Even coming off the bench and with a limited knee, she can utterly dominate the paint. It’s enough to be down on Charles’ scoring against this somewhat resurgent Los Angeles squad.
Dearica Hamby More Than 16.5 Points
Speaking of the Sparks’ surge, Dearica Hamby has been at the center of things. Los Angeles has won seven of their last eight games, launching themselves back into the playoff picture. Hamby has scored 15+ points in all eight games, averaging 19.5 points per game on 62% shooting. There’s little reason to think that will stop against the Connecticut Sun.
Tina Charles isn’t the defender she used to be, and Connecticut has little else to offer in terms of paint protection. Almost 90% of Hamby’s shots come within 10 feet of the basket. Opponents shoot 53.7% on two-pointers against the Sun, the worst mark in the league, and they allow the second-most free throws in the WNBA this season. It’s a rough formula for trying to contain Hamby. The only thing that can stop her is the scoreboard getting out of hand, which may send her to the bench early.
Sophie Cunningham More Than 1.5 Threes Made
It seems that Sophie Cunningham has gotten over her mini-slump. Indiana’s enforcer had six straight games with two or more made threes before going into a funk, making just two of 10 three-point attempts over a three-game span. Now she’s back in rhythm, hitting six of nine threes over her last two games. They’ll need her to get those shots up if they want to beat the Mercury.
Phoenix boasts a great defense and does well at limiting star perimeter creators. That means Kelsey Mitchell will be looking for her outlets. Cunningham has often been that outlet, and if the volume is there, she will deliver.
