On Monday, the Braves put third baseman Austin Riley on the injured list due to a strained lower abdominal muscle. He was on the injured list with a similar injury for two weeks in July and appeared to re-injure himself while tagging out Reds speedster Elly De La Cruz at home plate on Sunday.
Here’s the play where he was shaken up:
The Braves didn’t give a timetable for him to return, but now that the team is out of serious contention, they’ll likely be very cautious with their star third baseman.
Riley is hitting .260 in 102 games with 16 homers and a .319 wOBA. He went just 4-for-37 (.108) but did have two homers in his nine games since returning from his last trip to the injured list.
While he is out, Luke Williams and Nacho Alvarez Jr. figure to see the majority of starts at third base. Alvarez is a 22-year-old prospect who hit .254 in Triple-A with one home run and a .363 wOBA in 18 games. Last year, Alavarez swiped 26 bags in 112 games in Double-A and Triple-A, so he brings good speed potential, even though he probably won’t do much to replace Riley’s power.
