John Cena, the Undisputed WWE Champion, is defending his title against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam. Since beating Rhodes for the title at WrestleMania 41, Cena has displayed signs of uncertainty about whether he should continue to display a more violent style and disrespect towards the fans.
Cena turned heel at the Elimination Chamber in February, joining forces with The Final Boss, The Rock, and turning on his former friend, Rhodes. But since then, everyone has been wondering if and when Cena could turn back to his old self, the one who was the ultimate good guy for 20 years.
Could there be a double turn between Cena and Rhodes at SummerSlam? Yes, but this seems too soon. Cena said after he won the title that he would be the last real champion and discussed feeling disrespected by the audience throughout his career. Turning babyface after all he has done and said, especially since winning the title three months ago, would feel like a rushed story.
With five more months left of Cena’s retirement tour, an extended time as a bad guy could be the best decision for everyone involved. Cena as a heel makes everyone await his next move, and a three-month title reign doesn’t seem enough, especially for the final time he will hold the title.
