Terry McLaurin is heading into the final year of the three-year, $68 million extension he signed with the Commanders back in 2022. He’s been vocal about his desire for a new long-term deal—one that would pay him upwards of $30 million per season. That would place him above recent extensions given to receivers like Courtland Sutton and DK Metcalf, who just inked new deals with the Broncos and Steelers, respectively.
After seemingly hitting an impasse in negotiations, Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that McLaurin has officially requested a trade from the Commanders.
McLaurin skipped voluntary workouts and sat out mandatory minicamp in June as contract talks stalled. He began training camp as a holdout but reported last week—only to be placed on the PUP list with an ankle injury. While he’s now back with the team, his limited participation effectively makes him a hold-in as negotiations continue.
McLaurin, 29, is coming off his best season as a pro in 2024, posting 82 catches for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns.

The Patriots make sense as a landing spot on paper—they’re thin at wide receiver behind Stefon Diggs, leaning heavily on second-year slot man Demario Douglas and rookie third-rounder Kyle Williams.
The Raiders are an even more logical fit. Outside of Jakobi Meyers, their receiving corps is among the league’s weakest, lacking a true difference-maker. The Titans are in a similar situation. While they at least have Calvin Ridley, they’re clearly in the business of making life easier for No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward by surrounding him with as much offensive firepower as possible.
Still, Washington remains the favorite to retain McLaurin. But with Week 1 fast approaching, the clock is ticking. Whether that means finalizing a long-term extension or exploring trade options, a resolution will need to come sooner rather than later.
