UPDATE: Ohtani is still in the game as the Dodgers’ designated hitter. He was removed from his start due to cramps, per NBC LA’s Michael Duarte.
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher/DH Shohei Ohtani exited Wednesday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds due to an apparent injury.
Ohtani started on the mound for the Dodgers and was pulled mid at-bat during the bottom of the fourth inning after throwing six straight balls. He had a brief conversation with the team’s trainer before being accompanied off the field.
The three-time MVP made his return to the pitching rotation on June 16 following recovery from Tommy John surgery and has seen a ramp-up in his workload ever since. It’s worth noting his 51 pitches before exiting tonight were the most he’d thrown so far this year.
Per ESPN reporter Alden Gonzalez, Ohtani did appear to remain in the dugout after leaving the mound.
