Being a catcher in the MLB can be a dangerous job. Francisco Alvarez showed that on Wednesday, taking a nasty ricochet to the head. He was forced to leave the game with a head injury.
The good news is that he didn’t have to leave immediately, but head injuries can be tricky. It’s possible that symptoms didn’t show immediately, only for the training staff to reconsider and pull him from the game. He was replaced by backup catcher Luis Torrens.
Alvarez, 23, was recently called back up to the majors after a Triple-A stint. Going into today’s game, the young catcher was batting .246 with four home runs in 41 games. The Mets will be hoping he gets back into the lineup soon as they push for a playoff spot yet again.
