The FedExCup regular season points race comes to a close this week with the top 70 golfers qualifying for the FedExCup Playoffs starting next week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The players’ final chance to make their way into the top 70 is this week’s Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC. It should be week full of plenty of drama and basically a tournament within a tournament as players push for the postseason. One way to back a player to do well without taking them to win the whole week is to select them as a winner of one of the Tournament Groups available on DraftKings Sportsbook. It’s a fun way to find some of your golf best bets this week.
Just to be sure we’re all on the same page, there are six groups set up on the tournament groups section of the Wyndham Championship page of DraftKings Sportsbook. To win these groups, you must select the lowest scorer for the entire tournament from the five players available. Dead heat rules apply in the case of a tie.
Players with similar odds are grouped together and go head-to-head for the lowest score in the group for the week. Picking from the five players in a Tournament Group is much easier than selecting the winner from the entire field, but the odds for these picks are still very favorable plus-money odds. Let’s pinpoint some golf best bets from the tournament groups this week.
Group B Winner: Jake Knapp (+400)
In Group B, Knapp has the longest odds in the group as he takes on defending champ Aaron Rai (+260), Hideki Matsuyama ($300), Akshay Bhatia (+360) and Harry Hall (+360), who I highlighted in my top pivot plays for the week. While I like Hall and Rai from that group, I like Knapp even better, especially at super-juicy odds like +400.
The 31-year-old from California got off to a slow start but has found a great rhythm in the second part of the season. He has posted five straight top-30 finishes, including a T3 last week at the 3M Open, when he was in the mix until he dunked his approach shot on the final hole.
Over the last 20 rounds, Knapp leads the entire field (and obviously this group) in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee. He also leads this whole group in Total Strokes Gained over that span, behind only Fitzpatrick. Knapp’s putter has even been cooperating lately, and he has proven he has the ability to go low in low-scoring environments like Sedgefield.
He has a high enough ceiling to take down Group B if he’s at his best again this week.
Group D Winner: Rickie Fowler (+300)
From one end of the odds to the other, I’m actually taking the favorite in Group D and rolling with Rickie. He’s matched up with Sam Stevens (+320), Cameron Young (+330), Max Greyserman (+350), and Michael Thorbjornsen (+360) in Group D.
Rickie starts the week at No. 61 in the FedExCup standings and seems very likely to at least make the first playoff event this year after missing the playoffs in 2024. If he wants to move into the top 50 and advance to the BMW Championship, he’ll need to do a little work in the next two weeks.
He has been playing very well lately, making the cut in 15 of his 18 events this season with seven top-25 finishes. While his lone top-10 finish was at the Memorial back at the start of June, he has three straight top-30 finishes at the John Deere Classic, The Open Championship, and the 3M Open coming into this week at Sedgefield.
He has mixed history at this event in the past, with a top-25 back in 2016, but two missed cuts in his last two visits in 2021 and 2022. He comes in with much better form this year, though,
Last week at the 3M Open, Rickie ranked in the top 10 in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, driving accuracy, and scrambling. This week, those are the same elements that will be emphasized along with consistency and positioning, which have become the strength of Rickie’s recent surge.
Greyserman is another option in this group with a very high ceiling, but he has struggled since his near-miss at the Rocket Classic at the end of June.
Group E Winner: Nicolai Hojgaard (+330)
In Group E, Hojgaard is in the mix with an interesting mix of international options. Denny McCarthy (+300), J.T. Poston (+300), Matt Wallace (+360) and Thorbjorn Olesen (+360).
The group overall comes in with shaky form outside of Hojgaard. McCarthy missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open Championship, where Poston also missed the cut after missing the cut at the John Deere Classic. Poston has won on this track before, but he hasn’t been in great form since the PGA Championship, finishing no better than T33. McCarthy has posted a few better finishes than that, but typically, he’s better at harder courses relative to par than low-scoring contests like this one.
Wallace and Olesen come in with better form but only short-term. Olesen finished T14 at the 3M Open last week, but he had missed the cut or finished outside the top 35 in each of his previous seven events. Wallace was T3 last week but that was his first top-10 of the season, and he has made just 12 of 21 cuts on the year.
Hojgaard is my pick here based on his impressive recent form that he has sustained for several weeks. He finished in the top 25 at the Rocket Classic, the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open Championship in his last three events, and proved he can contend in low-scoring conditions when he and his brother finished second at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
The 24-year-old from Denmark ranks fifth in the field in Total Strokes Gained over the last 20 rounds, and he has been especially sharp Tee-to-Green (ranking eighth during that span). He is typically accurate and precise on approach and can catch fire with his putter as well. He missed the cut last year at this venue but finished T14 in his debut in 2023. With his recent surge in sustained form and strong all-around game, a win this week wouldn’t shock me, and I think he’s one of the top golf best bets to claim this tournament group.
