It’s a rough day to be in the batter’s box if you want to stay safe. Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Pérez have exited Monday’s game against the Braves after being hit on the elbow in the third inning.
Pérez stayed in the game to catch the fourth inning, but left before the fifth inning. He was replaced by Freddy Fermin. The good news is that if Pérez felt good enough to keep catching, it may not be a serious injury. The Royals will run some tests and there will be updates sooner than later.
Pérez, 35, was 1-for-1 with an RBI single in tonight’s contest before leaving. He’s batting .254 on the season with a .750 OPS. He’s bashed 18 home runs while hitting in the middle of Kansas City’s lineup. Perez’s veteran presence behind the dish and in the clubhouse has been a fixture in Kansas City for more than a decade. Any extended absence would be a blow to its slim playoff chances.
