UPDATE: Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters following the game that Aroldis Chapman is dealing with back tightness and it is not expected to be serious. More updates will be provided, but the expectation is that he will avoid an IL stint.
Aroldis Chapman left today’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers with an injury. The Red Sox’s standout bullpen arm was pulled after just three batters as his velocity and control were erratic.
Chapman walked his first two batters before getting Shohei Ohtani to fly out. He also had a pitch clock violation and did not register a pitch faster than 95 mph. For a player who consistently hits triple digits on the radar gun and has thrown as fast as 105 mph in his career, seeing a fastball come in at just 93 raises some concerns.
It is unclear at this point what exactly the injury or issue is with Chapman, but he did seem to be moving around gingerly when leaving the game and in the dugout. This also comes less than 24 hours after Chapman struck out Mookie Betts to end last night’s win.
More updates will be added as they are provided regarding Chapman’s injury.
As things currently stand, the Red Sox hold the seventh-best odds of winning the American League at +1600 on DraftKings Sportsbook.
