Seattle comes into Anaheim breathing fire after a dominant 7-2 win last night. They’ve taken two of three in this series and have every edge to finish with a flourish. The Mariners (56-49) are fighting for a Wild Card and playing like it—winners of five of their last six road games—while the Angels (50-55) are spiraling, having lost six of eight. In Saturday’s game, Seattle’s talent gap was evident in every phase. Today it should be even more lopsided, chiefly due to the pitching matchup. The M’s send out Logan Gilbert, a rising ace in peak form, against veteran Kyle Hendricks, whose best days are behind him. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Sunday night baseball game between the Angels and the Mariners.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Angels vs. Mariners prediction, preview
Gilbert (3-3, 3.07 ERA) might be baseball’s most underrated strikeout artist. The 28-year-old righty is dealing a 13.1 K/9 rate with vicious swing‑and‑miss stuff. He’s fresh off back-to-back scoreless starts and has allowed just five earned runs in four July outings. Gilbert’s mid-90s fastball and biting slider should dominate an Angels lineup that looks lost. The Halos are averaging only 4.32 runs (17th MLB) and have struck out 9+ times in four of their last five games.
Last night, Seattle’s George Kirby fanned nine Angels in six innings; Gilbert could match or exceed that. He’s also a workhorse who can get deep, giving the M’s bullpen a lighter day.
Across the diamond, the Angels trot out Kyle Hendricks (5-7, 4.92 ERA), a contact‑centric pitcher with declining velocity. The crafty righty thrives on pinpoint control, but Seattle’s hitters are patient and powerful enough to punish any mistakes. Hendricks has only 56 Ks in 100.2 IP, meaning the ball will be in play—loudly. In his last three starts, Hendricks has a bloated 7.50 ERA and was tagged for 3 homers. Facing a Mariners squad that ranks T‑fifth in MLB with 147 homers, that’s a recipe for disaster.
Seattle’s offense is clicking on all cylinders. They’re 11th in runs per game and feature a lethal blend of power and speed. Catcher Cal Raleigh leads the team with 40 HR and 85 RBI, while still-young, still-budding(?) superstar Julio Rodríguez has 25 steals and is riding a six‑game road HR streak. The Mariners are one of only four teams ranked top‑10 in both steals and homers, illustrating their ability to manufacture runs.
By contrast, the Angels are increasingly one‑dimensional. Los Angeles also lacks table‑setters: they rank 28th in steals and 29th in doubles, indicating a station‑to‑station offense with little aggression. That won’t cut it against Seattle’s stout pitching (Mariners team ERA 3.87, 12th MLB).
Mariners vs. Angels pick, best bet
The Angels’ recent form and trends spell trouble. They were shut down in seven of their last nine games, scoring two-or-fewer runs in those defeats. They’ve also lost eight straight day games against AL teams after a loss. = Sunday fits that trend after Saturday’s beating. In fact, L.A. has failed to cover the run line in five consecutive day games at home following a loss, often falling behind early and never catching up.
The Mariners, conversely, have covered in five of their last six on the road, reflecting their strong play away from home. Seattle’s confidence is evident; they’ve already won this series and outscored L.A. 14-7 in the last two games. Scott Servais has his club aggressive from the first pitch—note that Seattle has gone over 0.5 runs in the 1st inning in eight of the Angels’ last nine AL games, often thanks to Mariners ambushing starters early. Don’t be surprised if J-Rod or Raleigh puts Hendricks on the ropes in the opening frame.
The Mariners have every advantage: the hotter lineup, the far superior starter, and better bullpen backup if needed. Hendricks is unlikely to silence Seattle—the Mariners plated seven runs on 12 hits yesterday and look to pile on again. Meanwhile, Gilbert should dominate an Angels lineup that managed just five hits last night. Expect a confident, energetic Seattle squad to jump ahead and never relent. Mariners by a wide margin. A 6-2 or 7-3 victory feels imminent, covering the -1.5 with room to spare.
Best bet: Mariners -1.5 (+135) at Angels
