Philadelphia and Boston have gone toe-to-toe for two games, both finishing under the number, both defined by pinpoint pitching and stranded runners. Tonight, the finale forecasts another low-scoring, suffocating chess match, with Lucas Giolito and Jesús Luzardo anchoring the tempo. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Wednesday night baseball game between the Phillies and the Red Sox.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Phillies vs. Red Sox prediction, preview
Giolito has been everything Boston hoped for since the signing, finally. He’s allowed three or fewer earned runs in six straight, wielding a sharp changeup and riding a 29.1% CSW. His 1.24 WHIP signals command and consistency, and Philadelphia’s fastball-heavy profile aligns poorly with Giolito’s vertical movement. He’s given up just four home runs in his last 44.2 innings. That matters in a park like Citizens Bank, where mistakes get punished. But Giolito’s living on the edges and killing barrels.
Across the diamond, Luzardo’s 4.29 ERA betrays his real value. His FIP (2.65) and xERA (3.08) reveal a pitcher missing bats and battling bad luck. His 27.5% strikeout rate and elite 15.2% swinging strike rate place him among the league’s nastiest lefties. Boston has flailed against high-spin sliders and premium velocity—Luzardo has both. Duran, Abreu, and Yoshida, Boston’s core left-handed threats, are hitting under .200 in July. Without right-handed production behind Abreu, this offense collapses fast against power lefties.
The Phillies haven’t fared much better at the plate. They’ve scored four total runs in the last 14 innings, and they’re striking out in 27% of plate appearances over the last seven games. Schwarber and Harper are boom-or-bust, and against Giolito’s sequencing, they’re more likely to chase than connect. And this bullpen matchup? It’s a wash—both units are rested and sitting under a 3.75 ERA in July. José Alvarado slams doors.
Red Sox vs. Phillies pick, best bet
This series has played tight, tense, and cold offensively. Boston has seen six straight unders as a dog versus NL East teams. Four of the last five meetings between these teams have also gone under.
Two quality arms. Two slumping offenses. Two pens ready to finish what the starters leave. I see something like 4–2, nothing more.
Best bet: Red Sox vs. Phillies u8.5 total runs (+100)
