Wednesday gives baseball fans a loaded 15-game MLB slate to dig into. Among the matchups to watch, the Brewers attempt to strengthen their position in the National League with a win over the Mariners. Elsewhere, the Red Sox will hope to get back on track with a road win against the contending Phillies. Finally, the Yankees and Blue Jays wrap up their pivotal AL East showdown in Toronto.

Seiya Suzuki less than 1.5 total bases
The Cubs are an absolute machine on offense, averaging the league’s second-most runs per game (5.28). Leading the charge has been outfielder Seiya Suzuki. Despite offseason trade rumors, Chicago’s front office decided to hold on to the fourth-year pro. Safe to say, that decision has paid off. Through 97 games, Suzuki is slashing .258/.316/.537 with 26 home runs and 81 RBIs.
As great as those numbers are, great pitching usually neutralizes even the most dangerous bats. That could be the case tonight when Seth Lugo’s Royals visit Wrigley Field. Despite his teammates offering minimal run support, the 35-year-old ace has been terrific once again. Over 107.0 innings of work, the southpaw has notched a 2.94 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 93 strikeouts. Right-handed batters are hitting a paltry .170 against the veteran in 2025. That’s bad news for Suzuki, who has recorded just one hit during his last 15 at-bats. Don’t expect his slump to end against one of the American League’s top arms.
Quinn Priester more than 4.5 strikeouts
On a stacked Brewers rotation, Quinn Priester can often get lost in the shuffle. Still, the 24-year-old has put together a solid season thus far. Through 18 appearances, the right-hander has posted a 3.33 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 80 strikeouts. As if that wasn’t enough, Milwaukee’s hurler is fresh off of a six-inning, ten-strikeout masterpiece against the Dodgers last week. Over his last four outings, the youngster has produced a minuscule 2.28 ERA.
Priester won’t be facing the most difficult challenge tonight against the Mariners. Granted, Cal Raleigh and company can rake. However, the team’s offensive output is diminished at pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park. Seattle is striking out 8.92 times per game when playing at home, baseball’s third-worst mark. Priester has accounted for at least five K’s in three of his previous four showings. Expect that to continue on Wednesday afternoon.
Brandon Walter less than 17.5 outs recorded
Despite so-so hitting, the Astros are comfortably atop the AL West thanks to a deep pitching staff. One of the unexpected surprises for Houston this season has been Brandon Walter. The 28-year-old rookie didn’t enter the year to much fanfare, but he’s becoming an important piece to this rotation. Through 46.2 innings of work, the left-hander has put up a 3.66 ERA, 47 strikeouts, and a stellar 0.96 WHIP.
Despite lacking swing-and-miss stuff, Walter has thrived due to exceptional control (0.58 BB/9). That has allowed him to pick up plenty of quick outs. That might not be the case in Wednesday’s matchup. The Diamondbacks, for all their flaws, remain one of the league’s most potent lineups. Arizona has delivered the league’s ninth-highest OPS against lefties (.724). While Walter can still deliver a solid start, I’m not banking on another six-inning performance this afternoon.
Slade Cecconi less than 2.5 earned runs allowed
A major surprise for the Guardians has been the play of Slade Cecconi, acquired from Arizona last winter. This season, the third-year pro is responsible for a 3.84 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 58 strikeouts. In six of his last eight appearances, the right-hander has allowed two runs or fewer. For a Cleveland squad in need of front line pitching, could this be a new ace?
I’m not willing to go that far, but it’s clear that Cecconi is here to stay. It’s telling that manager Steven Vogt has let the hurler toss seven or more innings in three of his five most recent starts. Cleveland’s breakout star will look to go the distance once again tonight vs. the Orioles. During the month of July, only the Pirates have scored less than Baltimore’s 55 runs. Against a struggling lineup at home, there’s no reason to assume Cecconi won’t come through tonight.
Jackson Holliday more than 1.5 hits + runs + RBIs
Speaking of the Orioles, there haven’t been many bright spots for the American League East cellar dwellers. However, it looks like Jackson Holliday is starting to fulfill his sky-high potential. The former prospect struggled mightily in 2024, raising doubt about his future in Baltimore. After an inconsistent first few months this season, the 21-year-old finally looks like a future star. Since June 20th, he’s hitting .277 with five home runs and 12 RBIs.
Those numbers aren’t eye-popping, but it’s enough for O’s fans to feel optimistic. The infielder has been on a roll this week as well, tallying five hits over his last 13 at-bats (.333 batting average). The aforementioned Cecconi is no easy task tonight, but he does have some weaknesses. Left-handed hitters are batting .265 against Cleveland’s hurler this season. Given the way Holliday is swinging lately, I’m willing to trust Baltimore’s young phenom on Wednesday.
Jesus Luzardo more than 6.5 strikeouts
Arguably the biggest offseason pickup for the Phillies, it’s been an up-and-down season for Jesus Luzardo. The former Marlins ace got off to a strong start, only to suffer several ‘blow-up’ starts. That includes a 12-run shellacking against the Brewers on May 31st. Still, the southpaw is also capable of delivering masterful performances on the mound. Look no further than his seven scoreless innings against the Giants two weeks ago. Unsurprisingly, Luzardo’s ERA is a middling 4.29 so far.
At this point, it’s difficult to trust Philadelphia’s newest arm. However, tonight’s opponent could lean into his strengths. The Red Sox are striking out at the league’s second-highest rate when playing on the road. In addition, Boston’s hitters have recorded baseball’s third-most punch outs against left-handed pitching. Luzardo has notched seven or more K’s in four of his last five outings. I’m willing to bet we see the good version of the All-Star during Wednesday’s matchup.
