MLB Picks Today: Player Props and Team Props for Tuesday, July 22, 2025
Chicago Cubs -1.5 run line through first five innings +105 vs. Kansas City Royals
It’s 2025, and we’re still talking about Rich Hill — who makes his Royals debut tonight. The 45-year-old has been working his way through the Royals’ minor league system, making 11 starts across various levels. In that span, he posted a 5.22 ERA with a 5.76 FIP, along with a 10.9 K/9 (honestly impressive), a 4.5 BB/9, and a 1.9 HR/9. So while he’s still generating strikeouts, he’s also allowing a fair number of baserunners.
Tonight’s matchup doesn’t do him any favors. The Cubs are one of the worst possible teams for a lefty to face — especially given how well the top of their lineup hits southpaws. It’s hard to imagine the Cubs struggling against Hill, so I expect their offense to be clicking from the jump.
On the other side, the Royals face a tough challenge in Matthew Boyd. Kansas City has been one of the league’s worst offenses overall and has particularly struggled against left-handed pitching. Tonight’s projected lineup carries a combined .393 wOBA, a modest .130 ISO, and a 21% strikeout rate. Boyd, meanwhile, hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last nine starts, dating back to May 23.
So while a -1.5 run line through the first five innings is steep, I’m confident the Cubs can cover it given the circumstances.
Ronald Acuna Jr 3+ H/R/RBI +135 vs. San Francisco Giants
Ronald Acuña Jr. is on an incredible run right now. In July, he’s recorded at least three hits, runs, or RBIs in 7 of the 15 games he’s played. Over the full season, he’s averaging 2.5 of those combined stats per game.
Tonight, he has a great opportunity to keep that momentum going against Giants starter Landen Roupp. Roupp features a mix of sinkers, curveballs, and changeups — all pitches Acuña has historically handled well. Dating back to last season, Acuña has posted at least a .331 wOBA and a .182 ISO against each of those pitch types.
We also saw last night just how dynamic he can be — scoring from first base on a ground ball to right field — proving he’ll do whatever it takes to make things happen.
Corey Seager 2+ total bases +100 vs. Athletics
J.T. Ginn has been a bright spot for the Athletics this season. He began the year in the rotation, shifted to the bullpen, and now returns to the starting role tonight. While it likely won’t be a long outing — probably no more than four innings — this still looks like a great spot for Corey Seager.
Ginn has struggled significantly against left-handed hitters, allowing a .477 wOBA and an 8.92 FIP, with five of the eight home runs he’s surrendered coming from lefties. He relies heavily on his sinker, a pitch Seager has consistently crushed. Dating back to last season, Seager owns a .406 wOBA against sinkers.
