MLB Best Bets Today: Baseball Picks, Predictions for Tuesday 7/22/25

It’s Tuesday. That means there’s a lot of baseball happening tonight. Like, so much baseball.

All 30 teams will be in action, so there’s virtually unlimited wagering options available to you on the DraftKings Sportsbook. Here are my two MLB best bets for this evening’s action on the diamond.

Los Angeles Angels at New York Mets

Over 9.5 (-101)

Here’s some breaking news: The Angels like to play high scoring games. I know, it’s shocking that a club that ranks fourth in MLB in home runs (147) and 26th in ERA (4.67) would hit the over as often as Los Angeles does, right? Coming into Tuesday’s action, the Angels have hit the over in 55.7% of their contests in 2025 — the third-highest rate in the league, trailing only the Mariners and the Athletics. I guess things get a little wild in the AL West.

Specific to tonight, this is a pitching matchup that just screams for crooked numbers on the scoreboard. Let’s start with Kyle Hendricks. There are no secrets with the veteran RHP. He’s out here to induce contact and eat innings, as evidenced by first percentile marks in both average fastball velocity (86.3) and whiff rate (16.8%). Hendricks did have two good outings to begin 2025, but since then, he’s pitched to a 5.29 ERA and a 4.96 FIP over 16 appearances. At this point in his career, he’s simply one of the worst starters in MLB. There’s no debate.

Then there’s Frankie Montas. The right-hander spent the majority of the first-half of the season on the IL and things have not gone well since his return to the Mets, as Montas is currently rocking a 5.03 ERA over four starts. It’s not like there were positive signs for Montas in his rehab, either. In fact, in four Triple-A outings, the 32-year-old allowed 21 earned runs in only 14.1 innings. I can accept the excuse that Montas wasn’t quite built up during those starts, but still. That’s awful.

Kansas City Royals at Chicago Cubs

Cubs -1.5 (-112)

I just can’t take this Rich Hill start seriously. I can’t.

Maybe if the 45-year-old were pitching well in the minors I’d allow myself to believe a little bit, but that’s not the case. In nine starts in Triple-A, Hill was mustering a 5.36 ERA and a 6.01 FIP, thanks primarily to conceding 1.93 opponent home runs per nine and a gargantuan 13.0% walk rate. That’s not going to get it done against a Cubs lineup that possesses the league’s third-highest wRC+ against left-handed pitching (113). Honestly, I’m not sure it would get it done anywhere in the majors. Remember, Hill looked completely cooked the last time he was a full-time starter in 2023, registering a 5.66 xERA across 146.1 innings. Why would it be any different two years later?

I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to mention All-Star Matthew Boyd here, as well. The lefty has been wonderful so far in 2025, with Boyd’s 2.34 ERA the fifth-lowest mark among all qualified pitchers. Seriously. The list goes Paul Skenes, Tarik Skubal, Garrett Crochet, Jacob deGrom then Boyd. Who would’ve thunk it? The 34-year-old has been even more dominant in his past nine outings, sporting a microscopic 1.28 ERA and 2.58 FIP dating all the way back to May 28. I might not trust Rich Hill at all, but the opposite is true for Boyd.
