When will Francisco Alvarez be back with the New York Mets?

On Sunday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reported that the Mets are recalling catcher Francisco Alvarez from Syracuse after he spent the past month in Triple-A. He’ll have his first chance to be in the lineup as the Mets host the Angels on Monday night.

The Mets sent Alvarez to Triple-A after his last game on June 21. He was hitting just .236 with three homers, a .295 wOBA and a 92 wRC+ through 35 games. The 23-year-old slugging catcher looked like a regular part of the Mets for many years to come after hitting 25 homers in 2023, but his power dropped last year and fell even further before his surprise demotion.

Since joining Syracuse, though, Alvarez hit .298 with 10 home runs, 22 RBI and a .496 wOBA. His power resurgence will be a key addition for the Mets as they get ready for the trade deadline and look to finalize their roster for the playoff push.

The Mets are currently in the second NL Wild Card spot and just 0.5 games behind the Phillies in the NL East. The Mets won on Sunday to avoid a sweep by the Reds, and they’ll hope Alvarez can give their offense a boost in the playoff race. On DraftKings Sportsbook, the Mets are +125 to win the division and +1100 to win the World Series.
