Pete Alonso injury update: Why isn’t Mets’ first baseman in Sunday’s lineup?

The New York Mets will host the Cincinnati Reds in the final game of their three-game series on Sunday, but they’ll have to get by without one of their top sluggers at the plate.

First baseman Pete Alonso will be out of the lineup Sunday afternoon, as he has a right hand contusion and is considered day-to-day.

Alonso has been key in New York’s lineup to help it to a 55-44 record so far and just 1.5 games out of first in the NL East. The Mets’ slugger is in the midst of a career year, slashing .276/.370/.522, leading New York with 77 RBIs while his 21 homers are second on the team.

Mark Vientos will start at first base for the Mets with a .125 AVG against the Reds in eight at-bats against them this season.
