One of the MLB’s most-desired pitchers may have sustained an injury with less than a month remaining until the trade deadline.
Miami Marlins starter Edward Cabrera exited Friday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles early after throwing just four innings.
It remains unclear why Cabrera exited early, though it seems possible he suffered an injury of some sort. Per Kevin Barral of Fish on First, the pitcher was seen walking to the clubhouse with a trainer once he exited the game. It’s possible the right-hander tweaked something on one delivery, the video of which is linked below.
Cabrera threw 76 pitches in total for the Marlins in his start, 53 of which went for strikes. He allowed eight hits and four earned runs while striking out six batters and not allowing a walk.
The 27-year-old is one of the more intriguing names to watch on the MLB trade market ahead of the deadline at the end of July. He’s amassed a 3.61 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 86 punchouts across 82.1 innings this season, so it’s easy to see why teams around the league may be interested in acquiring the right-hander’s services.
With trade interest in Cabrera remaining one of baseball’s worst-kept secrets, it’s possible the Marlins pulled him early for precautionary reasons in order to keep him healthy for a potential deal.
