Swiatek could make an argument that she is once again the best woman in the world, she would be an Australian Open away from the career Grand Slam and she would move to solo 11th on the Open Era Grand Slam titles list. Wimbledon has been Swiatek’s worst Grand Slam venue throughout her career, so this win would be a massive breakthrough at long last.
Anisimova is looking to stop Swiatek from taking another step toward all-time greatness. Anisimova is not only one of the best stories in tennis, but in all of sports at the moment. She was a phenom who broke onto the scene at 17 years old by defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the 2019 Australian Open and 2019 French Open. After defeating one of the world’s best players in two Grand Slams in the same year at such a young age, she was slated to be one of the next big things in the sport. However, a combination of factors led to her taking a break from the game in 2023. She didn’t pick up a racket for months before returning in 2024. She kept working to get her game back to the elite level, and her story came full circle by once again beating Sabalenka in a Grand Slam. She defeated the World No. 1 and is now in her first career Grand Slam Final.
Swiatek vs. Anisimova pick, best bet
This is a matchup of experience versus desire. Of course, Swiatek desperately wants to win her first Wimbledon title and continue to etch her name deeper into the history books, but sometimes hungry dogs truly do run faster. Anisimova has worked tirelessly over the past two years to get her game into a position where she could win a tournament like Wimbledon. Being this close to the mountain top, will either make or break Anisimova. If she plays like she did against Sabalenka, with confidence and poise, she can win this match against the former World No. 1. However, if the pressure gets to her, Swiatek’s experience will pick her apart.
These two have never played each other before in a professional tournament. It will be a great battle between Anisimova, a powerful server with the best backhand on tour, and Swiatek, an experienced player with better point construction than any player of this era. Anisimova’s two keys to victory are forcing backhand-to-backhand rallies and hoping Swiatek’s serve is off. If Swiatek struggles with her serve and gives Anisimova free points, she could get punished. Also, the backhand-to-backhand rally is the one aspect of the game where Anisimova has a real physical advantage.
Ultimately, experience is likely to win on Saturday. Swiatek is a five-time major champion, while Anisimova is playing in her first-ever Grand Slam Final. Anisimova showed great poise against Sabalenka, but Sabalenka is also her own worst enemy in matches like that. Swiatek will not make the same mental errors and will punish the smallest mistakes that Anisimova makes. Swiatek is 30-6 in finals in her career. When she gets this close to a title, she almost always seizes it. Anisimova has had an incredible run, but it likely comes to an end here. There could easily be a set where Swiatek’s serve slips or Anisimova dominates with her incredible backhand, and she steals a set. However, over the course of the match, Swiatek’s game is just too good. My best bet is for Swiatek to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title by a score of two sets to one.
