The two best players in the world are facing off in the second consecutive Grand Slam final. Just a few weeks ago at Roland Garros, these two put on one of the greatest displays the game has ever seen, as Alcaraz came back from down two sets to win the French Open. Despite some great battles along the way, the two of them are back in the same spot at Wimbledon. Alcaraz defeated Taylor Fritz in four sets to get to this final. Alcaraz shockingly needed five sets to survive the first round of this tournament, but just kept getting better as Wimbledon went on. Fritz, the fifth-best player in the world, played some of the best tennis of his life, but Alcaraz still took him down in four sets. His game is on another level at the moment, and he is nearly impossible to beat.
The only player in the world who is on the same level of greatness at the moment is Sinner. The World No. 1 made short work of the great Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, winning that match in three sets, just like he did in the semis at Roland Garros. Sinner got thrown a lifeline in the Round of 16 when his opponent, Grigor Dimitrov, had to retire from the match with an injury despite being up two sets to zero. Sinner looked to be on the brink of elimination, but got a free pass to the quarterfinals, where he dominated Ben Shelton. Despite playing fantastic tennis in the semis, he did get to face a Djokovic who was clearly not at 100%. So, it’s hard to analyze exactly how good Sinner’s form has been. Other than the two sets against Dimitrov, he has not dropped a set the entire tournament.
Alcaraz vs. Sinner pick, best bet
While Sinner is the top-ranked player in the world, Alcaraz has proven to be the man to beat in Grand Slams. After his comeback win at the French Open, Alcaraz now has five Grand Slam titles to Sinner’s three. This match at Wimbledon, just like that one at Roland Garros, will have a massive impact on the legacies of these two players. If Sinner can beat Alcaraz, he will be just one title behind him on the all-time Grand Slams list and they will be 1-1 against each other in Grand Slam finals. Both players will also be one title away from the career Grand Slam, with Alcaraz needing Australia and Sinner needing Roland Garros.
However, if Alcaraz wins, he will have a three-title advantage on the all-time Slams list and be 2-0 against Sinner in Grand Slam finals. A win at Wimbledon for Alcaraz would mean a historic three-peat at the All England Club and move him to 11th all-time in major titles at just 22 years old. It would also set up the chance for him to make real history at the US Open, with the opportunity to join Rafael Nadal and Djokovic as the only players to win three majors on three different surfaces in the same year.
History and legacy aside, there isn’t much to separate these two on the court. Alcaraz has established himself as the best player in the world on grass, but it wasn’t long ago that Sinner had multiple match points against Alcaraz in the French Open Final before letting it slip away. It should be another epic match between these two greats, but I can’t help but put my money on Alcaraz. He has won this tournament two years in a row and will be the most confident man in the building on Sunday. He is 8-4 in his career against Sinner, including winning all of their previous five meetings. Alcaraz has Sinner’s number, and this is his best surface. He is the deserved favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook and should find a way to win another epic final between these two great players.
