Djokovic is the record holder for most men’s Grand Slam titles, but joining Federer in the annals of Wimbledon history would truly cement him as the best man in the history of the sport. There have been times over the past few years when it seemed like the 38-year-old might be nearing the end of his career, but whenever that appears to be the case, he has a statement win that proves the doubters wrong. Despite not being at the peak of his game, Djokovic has made at least the semifinals in 13 of the past 16 Grand Slams that he has played in. Specifically at Wimbledon, the Serbian has made the final in six straight trips to the All England Club.
To get back on top and win his eighth title, Flavio Cobolli is the next man in his way. The young Italian is a rising star in the tennis world after winning his first two ATP titles this season and is on his best career Grand Slam run here at Wimbledon. Cobolli had previously never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam. Now, here he is facing a legend in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. This is by far the biggest match of the 23-year-old’s life, and a win would take his career to the next level. It will be tough for him to stay focused on playing his game and not become overwhelmed by the circumstances.
Djokovic vs. Cobolli pick, best bet
These two players have only faced each other once before. That match came in Shanghai in 2023, where Djokovic dominated Cobolli 6-1, 6-2. It has been relatively smooth sailing through this tournament so far for the veteran, too. He went to a fourth set in the first round but dominated the three sets that he did win. The same thing happened in the Round of 16, where Alex de Minaur stole the first set, but Djokovic won the next three. Cobolli will be an easier test for Djokovic than de Minaur was in the previous round. Djokovic’s game is on another level compared to Cobolli, and the weight of the occasion could get to the rising star. My best bet for this match is for Djokovic to win in straight sets. He will be highly focused this late into the tournament, and will want to save his body for the big semifinals and potential final ahead. He should take care of Cobolli in short order.
