Seattle Mariners vs. Pittsburgh Pirates prediction, pick for Sunday 7/6/25

The tension at T-Mobile Park today is palpable as the Mariners eye a sweep and the Pirates fight to halt their slide. Seattle’s pitching has throttled Pittsburgh’s lineup all series, holding them scoreless across two straight. The Pirates, despite trotting out ace Paul Skenes, face an uphill battle against a Mariners squad surging with confidence at home. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Sunday baseball game between the Mariners and the Pirates.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Mariners vs. Pirates prediction, preview

Every pitch matters when Paul Skenes takes the mound. His 2.03 ERA and .182 opponent average show why. Skenes owns the zone. Right-handers against him are slashing a pitiful .216 OBP, with just a .523 OPS overall. His fastball at the top of the zone has been lethal, holding hitters to a .121 average. He doesn’t just pitch — he dictates terms.

But the Pirates offense has no bite. They’ve been shut out two straight games. Their road OPS? A miserable .590, lowest in baseball. Pittsburgh’s slugging percentage away from PNC Park sits at a feeble .311. The Pirates have cracked 61 home runs all year. That’s T-29th in MLB. The bats disappear on the road, and no one’s stepped up to change that narrative.

George Kirby’s season line doesn’t pop — a 4.85 ERA and 2-4 record. But Kirby controls the strike zone with precision. His 2% walk rate to right-handers is MLB’s best. When behind in the count, he still lands 78% of pitches for strikes, second among starters. His ground ball double-play rate leads the league. Those numbers keep the traffic off the bases.

Cal Raleigh is the Mariners’ engine. His 35 homers lead the league, and his .646 slugging electrifies the lineup. The Mariners rank T6th in home runs and 5th in stolen bases. The Pirates? Near dead last in both. Seattle’s offense is deep, disciplined, and dangerous.

Pirates vs. Mariners pick, best bet

Skenes is elite. The Pirates have covered the run line in 10 of their last 11 road games against AL West opponents. They’ve won six of Skenes’ last eight starts. But what does it matter if no one scores? Skenes can’t hit for himself. The Pirates’ 3.5 runs per game rank 28th. They’ve been blanked in back-to-back games. That’s not bad luck — that’s who they are.

Seattle owns this matchup at home. They’ve won seven of the last 10 against Pittsburgh. They’ve led after five innings in four of the last five at T-Mobile against the Pirates. Weather’s not a factor: clear skies, mild temps, light marine breeze — perfect for Seattle’s pitchers to work.

The Mariners bullpen has slammed the door. Their inherited runners score only 22% of the time. That’s a weapon late. Seattle’s 35-1 when leading after the 8th. Their ability to protect small leads is elite.

I’m locking in Mariners moneyline. The Pirates can’t support Skenes. Seattle has enough to scrape out runs, and the bullpen seals it. The under 6.5 is also sharp given both aces. The bats won’t break out today.

Best bet: Mariners (-120) vs. Pirates
