Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals prediction, pick for Sunday 7/6/25

It’s been a punch-trading effort between Chicago and St. Louis this weekend at Wrigley, with two massive offensive games to kick off July 4th weekend. St. Louis rallied back hard last night after the Cubs hit a record eight home runs on Friday, and the Cards determined to claw closer in the division and spoil Chicago’s momentum. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Sunday baseball game between the Cubs and the Cardinals.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Cubs vs. Cardinals prediction, preview

The public is all over the Cubs after back-to-back offensive explosions, driving up the price and inflating the line. That creates an opening on the St. Louis side, especially with the runline offering a cushion at a number that still feels too generous. Wrigley Field’s conditions and the makeup of these two rosters point to a tight, grind-it-out game where every base matters. I’m eyeing a different, more delicious angle, and I’m not letting it slip by.

The Cubs roll out Matthew Boyd, who’s been lights out at home with a 2.65 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, and a perfect 7-0 record at Wrigley. Boyd blanked this Cardinals lineup for six innings just two weeks ago, holding them to soft contact with a 29% hard-hit rate in that outing. His pitch mix has baffled righties at home all season, limiting them to a .192 average. But Chicago’s lineup has cooled despite their recent wins—their .298 wOBA across the last seven games is a steep fall from their season mark near .340. The Cubs have leaned heavily on the long ball at home, but tonight’s 8-10 mph wind blowing in from center neutralizes that power advantage. Wrigley transforms in these conditions, tilting the edge toward pitching and small ball rather than slugfests. Michael Busch has been red hot, but even his barrel rate has dipped to 6.5% over the last week. His recent RBI surge came against weaker pitching than he’ll face tonight. Seiya Suzuki, another key bat, has posted just a .214 average over his past 10 games, struggling to make consistent hard contact.

Erick Fedde enters with ugly surface numbers after getting torched by these same Cubs in his last start. But dig deeper and the story shifts. His xERA sits at 3.65, almost a full run lower than his actual ERA, pointing to bad luck inflating his stats. His road K:BB ratio is shaky (57:38), but his 48% ground ball rate and ability to induce soft contact (32% soft-hit rate away from home) make him a sneaky bet to rebound. Nolan Arenado has quietly found his rhythm, slashing .298/.355/.477 over the past two weeks with a 42% hard-hit rate. Paul Goldschmidt enters tonight with hits in five of his last six and has slugged .515 against lefties this season. Even Masyn Winn, often overlooked, has posted a .368 OBP in his last 15 games, grinding out quality at-bats that extend innings and pressure pitchers.

Cardinals vs. Cubs pick, best bet

The Cardinals have covered +1.5 in 12 of their last 16 as road dogs against NL Central foes, and they’ve won six of the last ten head-to-heads, including games at Wrigley. St. Louis also boasts a top-10 bullpen ERA over the past month, while the Cubs’ pen has been taxed hard in this homestand.

This line is priced for a blowout, but that’s not how this matchup shapes up. Every factor—from the weather to the market overreaction to Chicago’s recent wins—points toward a closer, lower-scoring game. The Cardinals’ offense has just enough pop, and Fedde’s underlying metrics suggest he’s in a good spot to outperform expectations. Wrigley’s conditions will do their part to keep this tight.

I’m locking in St. Louis +1.5 at around –115 as the contrarian play of the weekend. One which gives me both some market protection and nausea, seeing how much I’d love the Cubs to win this game. But, strategy says: this is how you beat inflated chalk.

Best bet: Cardinals +1.5 (-115) at Cubs
