LeBron James once again finds himself at the center of the NBA offseason discussions. Despite opting into his $52.6 million player option with the Los Angeles Lakers, the door appears open on another change of scenery, with some eyebrow-raising quotes coming from his agent, Rich Paul, beginning to come to light. James added more fuel to this internet fire by being spotted at the Cleveland Cavaliers’ practice facility.
James was quick to clap back at those connecting those dots, stating that he has worked out there every summer since it was built.
The Lakers made a blockbuster trade for Luka Doncic last season but did not have a chance to round out the roster due to the midseason nature of the trade. With the Western Conference incredibly deep with plenty of young cores and an underwhelming start to the Lakers’ free agency, James seems to be concerned with Los Angeles not being a legitimate contender. The four-time champion has some control over the situation with a no-trade clause in his contract. But it would take a trade to facilitate him finding a new team following the opt-in. There is an assumption that the Lakers would work with James if this is his desire, but it should be made clear that he is under contract in Los Angeles. If the organization has fully shifted onto Doncic’s timeline, a return to Cleveland to compete in the wide-open Eastern Conference.
Outside of the Lakers, the Cavaliers have climbed to the favorites for where LeBron James will play his first minute last season at +750 odds on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Do the Cavaliers Make Sense for LeBron James?
Flashback to 2003, and LeBron James was the first overall pick for his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers. There has been a rocky relationship with the franchise since this point, which included Cavaliers fans flooding the streets to burn his jersey as well as celebrating the 2015-16 championship that he helped bring to the city. James has spent two stints with the organization across 11 total years.
Cleveland is coming off a 64-18 season in which they led the Eastern Conference from wire-to-wire and produced the best record since James was on the roster. They swept the Heat in the opening round of the playoffs, outscoring them by an NBA-record 122 total points across the four victories. But the Cavaliers were then knocked out in the second round of the playoffs by the Indiana Pacers in five games. This postseason exit aged a bit better following Indiana’s postseason run, but it is impossible not to be frustrated by not making a deeper run.
As Donovan Mitchell put it himself during his exit interview, “We could go 82-0, no one will care,” regarding next year’s regular season.
The Eastern Conference is wide open, with the Cavaliers the favorite to win at +250 on DraftKings Sportsbook. They also hold the third-best championship odds at +850.
There is plenty of talent on this Cavaliers roster, headlined by Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. But there are fair questions regarding whether they maxed out what they can be together, and if a shakeup is the best direction. Patience is sometimes rewarded in the NBA, but every organization should be looking to maximize their chances, especially with the East so wide open. Adding James to their current core would certainly change the perception of this Cavaliers team as they look to legitimize themselves from a postseason perspective.
Cleveland checks the boxes from a narrative standpoint and makes some basketball sense. If he is fully impatient with the Lakers, it is tough to find a better landing spot than what the Cavaliers can offer.
Does LeBron James Make Sense for the Cavaliers?
The bigger question in all of this is what the Cavaliers’ level of interest is. While he is defying the usual laws of aging by professional athlete standards, James is set to turn 41 next season. Sacrificing the future for an improved short-term outlook is a tough balancing act that every organization battles, and this is an extreme example of this.
In addition, there are some significant hurdles brought on by the nearly $53 million contract that James has to his name. The Cavaliers are above the second apron, which brings on a ton of trade restrictions. The most problematic is that Cleveland cannot take on more salary in a trade than they send out, nor can they combine contracts to combat this. No member of the Cavaliers is making as much as James, which makes this a difficult ask. The effects of the new CBA have been put on full display this offseason with plenty of teams making financially motivated moves. In theory, Cleveland could make a separate trade to get under the second apron to open up some trade possibilities, but this is easier said than done.
If the Cavaliers want to get James on the roster bad enough, one would imagine they find a way. But the lengths they would need to go to make this possible complicate the calculation from Cleveland’s perspective. Adding James increases their 2025-26 season outlook in a vacuum, but this may not be as true if they need to shed some notable players to make it possible.
The coming weeks will likely tell us where James’ head is at in regard to his future. But Cleveland will be an interesting team to keep an eye on if the future Hall of Famer wants to add another chapter to his NBA career outside of Los Angeles.
