Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians prediction, pick for Friday 7/4/25

In 2024, the underdog Tigers lost a dramatic five-game Divisional Series matchup with the division-winning Guardians. So far this season, the roles have been reversed. Detroit has raced out to a 54-34 record, the American League’s top mark. In comparison, Cleveland finds itself five games under .500 at 40-45. Tonight, these two rivals will battle it out in a crucial July 4th showdown. Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Friday’s contest between the Tigers and Guardians.

The Tigers are favorites (-132) over the Guardians, with the over/under set at eight runs. Let’s break down which side has the edge on DraftKings Sportsbook entering tonight’s AL Central matchup.

Tigers vs. Guardians prediction, preview

The biggest storyline in this matchup for the Tigers is Reese Olson’s return. Health has been an issue for the right-hander; he’s missed over a month due to a finger injury. However, when active, the 25-year-old has a claim as Detroit’s second-best starter behind Tarik Skubal. Over 48.2 innings pitched, he’s notched a 2.96 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 51 strikeouts. In each of Olson’s five starts, he’s allowed three runs or less. Expect a lighter workload tonight as manager AJ Hinch eases the third-year pro back into action.

Fortunately for Olson, Friday’s game doesn’t appear too difficult on paper. The Guardians have struggled at the plate this season, averaging 3.64 runs per game. That’s the fifth-worst mark in all of baseball. Only four regulars in Cleveland’s lineup have posted a wRC+ above 100: Jose Ramirez (132), Steven Kwan (120), Kyle Manzardo (106) and Carlos Santana (103). Through 12.0 career innings vs. the Guardians, Olson has surrendered just four earned runs (3.0 ERA).

If Cleveland has any chance at pulling off a win tonight, it’ll take a quality start from Slade Cecconi. Granted, the righty has been an unexpected contributor for the Guardians this season. Over eight outings, he’s recorded a 3.64 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 42 strikeouts. That includes a six-inning, one-run showing against the Tigers on May 23rd. That performance was surprising on a number of levels. Detroit’s hitters rank eighth in OPS against right-handed pitching this season (.741). In addition, Cecconi owns an atrocious 5.79 ERA in three starts at Progressive Field.

Tigers vs. Guardians pick, best bet

Best Bet: Tigers ML (-132)

There’s an unknown factor with Olson returning after a lengthy absence. Still, the Guardians come into tonight having lost eight of their last ten games. There’s nothing that suggests Cleveland returns to form against a juggernaut Tigers squad.
