Chicago Cubs vs. Cleveland Guardians prediction, pick for Thursday 7/3/25

The Cubs have owned this series, taking the first two with clutch hitting and lockdown relief pitching. Cleveland stumbles in looking to avoid a sweep, their offense stuck in neutral. With both teams chasing postseason spots, tonight’s clash has urgency written all over it at breezy Wrigley. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Thursday night baseball game between the Cubs and the Guardians.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Cubs vs. Guardians prediction, preview

Chicago’s nickname is the Windy City for a reason. Tonight, a stiff breeze is knifing in over Wrigley Field, and this total is set around average, but the conditions are anything but. When the wind blows in at Wrigley, it’s like a wall in the outfield. Well-hit balls die on the warning track. Historically, games at Wrigley with moderate-to-strong headwinds (and totals below 13) have gone 293-194-24 (60%) to the under. We have exactly that setup here—flags rippling in, a total of 8.5, and a recipe for a pitchers’ duel.

The Guardians’ offense already struggles on the best of days. Cleveland ranks 26th in both runs scored and on-base percentage, with a team OBP of just .297. They’re also 28th in slugging at .364 and 29th in batting average at .225. Now they face promising Cubs rookie Cade Horton, who has excelled at home with a 3.38 ERA in his young Wrigley career. Horton can attack fearlessly knowing the wind will knock down any mistakes in the air. The Guardians have never seen him, giving the kid an early edge. Let’s not forget how anemic Cleveland has been on the road. The under has cashed in 18 of their last 23 away games. They simply don’t score much outside of Progressive Field, and the biting Chicago breeze won’t help their cause.

On the flip side, the Cubs boast a powerful lineup. Even their bats may be kept in check by Mother Nature. Chicago is second in the majors in runs and third in slugging. That’s normally a nightmare matchup for a fill-in starter like Joey Cantillo. However, the Guardians are going with a bullpen game by necessity. Cantillo is a lefty making his first MLB start, likely on a short leash. The element of unfamiliarity favors the pitcher the first time through the order. The Cubs might need an inning or two to gauge his repertoire. Even once Cleveland switches to relief arms, the constant change of looks could prevent Chicago from timing anyone up. The Cubs just faced two different Cleveland starters the last two nights. They scored a moderate five runs in each game. That was with the wind not as fierce. Now, every fly ball will be an adventure for hitters—long outs instead of home runs. Even the unstoppable PCA has just a .221 OBP against lefties. It’s a pattern, now.

Guardians vs. Cubs pick, best bet

Some might point out Chicago’s recent trend of overs at home. Four of the last five at Wrigley went over before this series. But those games didn’t have this wind. Oddsmakers posted 8.5 here for a reason, despite the Cubs’ offensive rankings and Cleveland’s unproven starter. They know what I know: Wrigley Field can turn big bats into harmless pop-ups. Even a slugger like Seiya Suzuki or Pete Crow-Armstrong will have to pierce a gale to go deep. Meanwhile, the Guardians look incapable of slugging in any conditions—they’re 28th in slugging percentage. They’re also missing multiple lineup pieces due to injury.

I anticipate a low-scoring, grind-it-out affair. The Guardians are desperate to avoid a sweep, which means playing small ball and leaning on their bullpen. The Cubs are content to win with pitching and defense if that’s what the night calls for. Horton should deliver a solid five innings, and Chicago’s bullpen (3.25 ERA) can handle the rest. Unless the wind miraculously dies down, balls will stay in the park and runs will stay at a premium. I’m decisively taking the Under 8.5, trusting the elements and these trends to cash us a ticket at Wrigley.

Best bet: Cubs vs. Guardians u8.5 total runs (-110)
