Philadelphia hasn’t looked great recently either, but an eight-inning shutout on Monday from Zack Wheeler lifted the team to a much-needed 4-0 victory. Now, these two National League powerhouses will battle it out in the second leg of a doubleheader. Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Wednesday’s Game 2 contest between the Padres and Phillies.

Padres at Phillies prediction, preview
Fans in Philadelphia will be treated to a marquee pitching matchup tonight. For the visiting Padres, it’ll be staff ace Dylan Cease taking the hill. It’s been a tough season for the right-hander, who has looked off. Over 91.1 innings of work, he’s accounted for a 4.53 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. However, Cease has still managed to notch an impressive 11.5 K/9 ratio, the second-best mark of his seven-year career. Keeping that in mind, it’s no surprise that the 29-year-old has a solid 3.23 FIP; he’s gotten unlucky so far.
Still, it’s not as if Cease has been sharp recently. Over his last three starts, the hurler has surrendered ten earned runs (5.74 ERA). Things won’t get much easier tonight against a potent Phillies lineup. This season, Philadelphia is averaging 5.17 runs per game at home, the sixth-best mark in baseball. In comparison, Cease owns an abysmal 6.31 ERA when pitching on the road. The righty’s only career start against the Phillies came during April of 2024. In that appearance, he coughed up five runs over six innings.
To counter the Padres, Philadelphia will turn to Cristopher Sanchez. On the heels of last season’s All-Star campaign, the 28-year-old has taken things to another level in 2025. Through 16 outings, the southpaw has posted a 2.79 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 103 strikeouts. At this point, a return to the Midsummer Classic appears inevitable. Sanchez has been on a tear as of late, allowing just seven runs over his previous 34.0 innings pitched (1.85 ERA).
That will be the challenge facing San Diego’s middling lineup tonight. This season, the Padres possess the league’s 22nd-highest scoring offense. Considering the amount of talent on this roster, it’s fair to call that mark disappointing. Against left-handed pitching, the Friars rank 21st in OPS (.657). In the month of June, San Diego tallied the fourth-fewest runs per game in baseball (3.89).

It’s tempting to go with a San Diego win at plus money. However, the logical play tonight is with Philadelphia. Sanchez has looked like one of the National League’s most dependable arms.
