Colorado Rockies vs. Houston Astros prediction, pick for Wednesday 7/2/25

The Astros enter scorching, winners of six of their last eight, with their lineup punishing mistakes and hunting extra-base hits. The Rockies, meanwhile, look overmatched. They’ve dropped 14 of their last 15 night games against teams with winning records and simply can’t stop the bleeding at home. The thin Denver air, the generous dimensions, and two contact-heavy pitching staffs set the stage for relentless offense. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Wednesday night baseball game between the Rockies and Astros.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Rockies vs. Astros prediction, preview

Let’s look at the matchup. Austin Gomber takes the mound for Colorado. Right-handed hitters have torched him this season to the tune of a .382 batting average and 1.181 OPS. That’s not a typo. Gomber’s soft-tossing, fly-ball approach is a disaster waiting to happen at Coors Field, where fly balls turn into doubles and homers at an alarming rate. His strikeout rate this season is just 13.5%, well below league average. That means contact—lots of it—and with Altuve’s elite bat-to-ball skills, it’s hard to envision Gomber missing enough bats to keep him off the bases. Gomber’s small 2025 sample? A bloated 6.14 ERA, 1.64 WHIP, and five homers allowed in just 14.2 innings. This is a pitcher you want to attack, especially with someone who feasts on lefties.

We can’t ignore Houston’s team context. The Astros are built to crush left-handed pitching. In 2023 they posted a .809 OPS against southpaws, among the best in MLB, and their core hitters remain intact. The Astros enter as heavy favorites (Moneyline near -260) and are projected to score heavily (game total 10.5). This is the perfect offensive script for Altuve to rack up plate appearances—likely five, given his leadoff spot—and opportunities to clear this prop. When the Astros hit, Altuve is the spark that ignites them.

Colorado’s bullpen offers no relief. Rockies relievers have posted one of MLB’s worst ERA figures this season and own a bottom-five strikeout rate at around 20%. That means even when Gomber exits, Altuve faces more contact-prone arms in a stadium where contact turns into damage. Coors Field inflates BABIP and slugging because of its dimensions and altitude. Balls that die on the warning track elsewhere land for doubles or clear the fence here.

That’s why we’re targeting Jose Altuve. Altuve’s gap-to-gap power and ability to go the other way play beautifully in this environment. His career Coors OPS of .970 isn’t luck—it’s a reflection of his skillset perfectly matching the ballpark’s quirks. And Altuve feasts on lefties. This season, he’s hitting .315 against southpaws, right in line with his career .304 average. His OPS against left-handers is consistently north of .850, showing he’s not just slapping singles—he’s driving the ball with authority. He’s also 4-for-6 lifetime against Gomber, which means he’s seeing Gomber’s mix with clarity and confidence. That combination—personal dominance over the pitcher, splits favoring him, and the perfect park—creates a high-probability scenario for Altuve to deliver two or more total bases tonight.

Astros vs. Rockies pick, best bet

Let’s not ignore form. Altuve hit a two-run homer in Houston’s last game, showing he’s locked in. He’s averaging 1.6 total bases per game this season—and that’s mostly in neutral or pitcher-friendly parks. Coors should amplify that. One solidly struck ball could cash this over in a single swing. His total bases prop opened at 1.5 with the over juiced, showing that oddsmakers expect activity from him tonight.

Add in the narrative: Houston has dominated this matchup, covering the run line in nine of the last 10 against Colorado. The Rockies have lost 14 of their last 15 night games against winning teams, often falling behind early and forcing bullpen usage. Altuve’s extra plate appearances could come against the soft underbelly of Colorado’s pitching.

Best bet: Jose Altuve o1.5 total bases (-160)
