July’s Major League Baseball slate is starting off hot, with several enticing matchups on Tuesday. Tonight’s action begins with a Canada Day showdown at Rogers Centre between the Yankees and Blue Jays. Later, the Brewers visit the Mets in a battle between National League contenders. Elsewhere, the Cubs host the Guardians for an inter-league showdown at Wrigley Field.

Kevin Gausman more than 2.5 earned runs allowed
It’s been a tumultuous season for Kevin Gausman. On paper, the two-time All-Star’s numbers look decent: 4.21 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 90 strikeouts over 94.0 innings. However, those statistics don’t reflect how erratic the right-hander has been on a start-to-start basis. Gausman has coughed up at least six earned runs on three different occasions, including a late April outing against the Yankees.
With that being said, the Bombers have looked off at the plate recently. During the month of June, New York scored the 13th-fewest runs in baseball (114). However, Aaron Judge and company have usually done well in this matchup. Over his last five appearances vs. the Yankees, Gausman owns an atrocious 11.50 ERA. That’s enough to expect at least three runs from the visitors this afternoon.
Andre Pallante more than 3.5 strikeouts
Andre Pallante hasn’t made many headlines this season, for better or worse. St. Louis’ pitcher owns a 4.43 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over 16 games this season. Those are perfectly fine, league-average numbers for the 26-year-old. If there’s one thing Pallante isn’t known for, it’s making batters swing and miss. The right-hander has notched a 6.2 K/9 ratio, the eighth-worst mark among qualified starters.
Fortunately for the Cardinals, the Pirates tend to make mediocre arms look like Cy Young contenders. Pittsburgh is scoring only 3.53 runs per game, fourth-lowest in baseball. In addition, the Buccos have the league’s eighth-highest strikeout rate. Pallante has accounted for 17 total whiffs during his last three starts against the Pirates. At just four K’s, almost every hurler can reach this modest total.
Yandy Diaz more than 1.5 total bases
The Rays are a well-oiled machine, surging into postseason contention during the month of June. A balanced lineup has plenty of names worth mentioning, including Yandy Diaz. Over 79 games, the first baseman is slashing .291/.345/.469 with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs. As the leadoff hitter for the sport’s seventh-highest scoring offense, there are usually plenty of at-bats to be had for the Cuban.
Tonight, Tampa Bay will face an old friend in Jeffrey Springs. The eighth-year pro was traded to the Athletics this offseason. So far, things have been good, not great, for the left-hander (4.30 ERA, 1.24 WHIP). Diaz is poised for success in this spot; he’s hit .305 against southpaws in his career. The former All-Star, one of the American League’s toughest outs, could give the A’s some trouble tonight.
Isaac Paredes more than 0.5 runs batted in
At 50-34, the Astros sit firmly atop the AL West division. That’s despite their best hitter, Yordan Alvarez, missing most of the season. How has Houston managed to stay competitive at the plate? Offseason pickup Isaac Paredes has played a major role. Acquired during the Kyle Tucker trade last winter, the third baseman has looked terrific in 2025. Through 80 games played, he’s slashing .254/.358/.468 with 17 homers and 46 RBIs.
As good as those numbers are, the biggest draw for this pick tonight is Houston’s opponent. The Rockies have put together an abysmal pitching staff, partially a result of playing their home games at high altitude. One of the biggest victims of the Coors Field effect has been Chase Dollander. Over six starts at home, the rookie is on the hook for a 8.54 ERA. Paredes, in six career games at Colorado, is hitting .385. Add it all up, and there should be ample opportunity for the slugger to drive in some runs.
Zac Gallen more than 4.5 strikeouts
Speaking of struggling starters, Zac Gallen has been one of baseball’s biggest disappointments. On a middling Diamondbacks squad, the former All-Star Game starter has posted a 5.75 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Most recently, he allowed five earned runs over 5.1 innings against the Reds. It’s not as if Gallen has been particularly unlucky; look no further than his subpar 5.18 FIP.
One of the most alarming statistics for Gallen has been his strikeouts, or lack thereof. The righty has put up an 8.2 K/9 ratio, the lowest mark of his seven-year career. Still, it’s not as if that’s an awful number. Tonight’s opponent, the Giants, have accounted for the league’s sixth-most strikeouts per game on the road (8.39). Gallen, over his last 11 starts against San Francisco, has tallied at least five K’s. As bad as the 29-year-old has looked recently, I don’t expect that to change on Tuesday.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto less than 1.5 earned runs allowed
Two years after signing a record-breaking deal with the Dodgers, Yoshinobu Yamamoto has lived up to expectations. Over 89.2 innings of work, the Japanese hurler has recorded a 2.61 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 101 strikeouts. After a pair of lackluster starts, the righty bounced back last week with five scoreless innings in Colorado. Right now, it’s safe to assume Yamamoto will be named to the National League All-Star team.
Expect Los Angeles’ ace to keep rolling against the White Sox. This season, the South Siders are averaging just 3.42 runs per game, the league’s second-lowest mark. In five of Chicago’s last ten games, the team has scored less than two runs. There’s a good chance that hitting futility continues against one of baseball’s premier pitchers. Look for Yamamoto to put up another dominant performance on Tuesday night.
