LeBron James has officially exercised his $52.6 million player option to remain on the Lakers for the 2025-26 season. But despite the contractual commitment, James appears set to decide if the Lakers are the best fit for him after seeing the organization’s plan for the offseason.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that James is keeping the door open for his NBA career to continue elsewhere. Here’s an excerpt from Charania’s article:
“James, the NBA’s career scoring leader, wants to compete for a championship next season and potentially beyond and will be closely monitoring the Lakers’ moves and whether the team is positioning itself this offseason to field a title-contending roster, Paul said.”
It is important to note that James has a no-trade clause in his contract, so a potential trade cannot happen without the four-time champion signing off or pushing for this type of move.
But the Lakers’ organizational outlook changed in a major way when they made the blockbuster trade for Luka Doncic last season. Trading away 32-year-old Anthony Davis for 26-year-old Luka Doncic extends Los Angeles’ championship window, and the Lakers are now attempting to balance winning now while building for the future. The Western Conference is incredibly deep, making the pathway to contention extremely difficult. With teams like the Thunder, Rockets and Spurs still with young rosters, the pathway does not get clearer anytime soon.

Both the Warriors and James have romanticized what life would be like with each other from afar. They also could each be wild enough to give it a shot if the opportunity arises.
Golden State made a high-risk move this year, trading for Jimmy Butler with the hopes of extending its championship window with Stephen Curry. A hamstring injury to Curry ended up sealing the Warriors’ postseason fate as they lost four consecutive games against the Timberwolves after winning Game 1. Similar to James, Curry continues to push past the expected aging process and is still producing at a high level in the twilight years of his career.
Getting Curry and James to share the floor would be a win for basketball purists everywhere, even if their best years are behind them. The decision to trade for Butler and give him a contract extension also shows the Warriors organization’s mindset in continuing to maximize their time with Curry as he prepares for his age-38 season. The salary figures make it difficult, but if the desire is there from James and the Warriors, one would believe they find a way. Competition in the West is tough, but a team with James and Curry has a chance in every single matchup. Their experience could pay dividends against the youthful rosters they will face.
No. 2 New York Knicks
It is tough to remember more imbalance between the two conferences than how things currently sit. The Eastern Conference is wide open, with questions about all of the top teams. Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton will each be returning from Achilles tears, Giannis Antetokounmpo has found himself in plenty of trade rumors, and the Cleveland Cavaliers have now flamed out in back-to-back playoffs after impressive regular seasons. The New York Knicks are coming off their most successful season in 25 years but fell short in the Conference Finals to the Pacers.
Despite the success they had, it is clear that the organization was not satisfied. Firing head coach Tom Thibodeau without a clear plan in mind is plenty of evidence of this. James has done nearly everything you can possibly do at the NBA level to this point. But there is something special about playing in New York, and the fan base is more alive than it has been in decades. New York has some youth on the roster and tradeable contracts that could make it a possibility. If James wants a clear path to contending for additional championships while remaining in a major market, the Knicks could make some sense.

Sometimes to move forward, you have to go back. Once upon a time, James was just a kid from Akron. He was the first overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003 and has spent two stints with the organization across 11 total years and bringing the 2016 championship to the city.
The Cavaliers are coming off a 64-18 season in which they led the Eastern Conference from wire-to-wire. This was the best record from the organization since James was still on the roster. They swept the Heat in the opening round of the playoffs, in which they outscored them by an NBA-record 122 total points in the four games. But all this success only led to the Indiana Pacers defeating them in five games in the second round,
As Donovan Mitchell put it himself during his exit interview, “We could go 82-0, no one will care,” regarding next year’s regular season.
Adding James would certainly change things and would necessarily raise their ceiling. It feels as if Cleveland has maxed out their potential level of success with the current core and could need to get creative to truly increase their championship chances. This type of reunion has the makings of a Hollywood movie and makes basketball sense. The Cavaliers are already the favorites to win the Eastern Conference on DraftKings Sportsbook, and adding James would surely shift this further. Returning to his home city with a clear chance at immediately competing for a championship is a pretty appealing landing spot if James’ impatience is beginning to be a factor in Los Angeles.
