Two first-place clubs, the Cubs and Astros, collide in a rubber match that feels like October in June. Both teams sit at 49-34, both hungry to seize a statement win in a marquee interleague showdown. The Astros have been a fortress at Daikin Park, riding elite pitching and timely hitting to dominate at home. The Cubs, powered by one of baseball’s most dangerous offenses, arrive with confidence after a 12-run outburst in Game 2. With Framber Valdez and Jameson Taillon set to clash on the mound, it feels advantage: Astros. But, is it? Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Sunday baseball game between the Astros and the Cubs.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Astros vs. Cubs prediction, preview
The stakes feel massive as two division leaders square off with everything on the line. Houston has owned Daikin Park this season, going 31-14 at home, and Valdez has been the anchor. His 2.04 ERA at home isn’t just strong—it’s a statement. He pairs that with a 59% groundball rate, the second-best among qualified AL starters, neutralizing power in a park with a sneaky 1.06 HR factor. The Cubs’ bats have been hot, sure, but their .241 average against lefties tells the real story. This isn’t the matchup where their power plays up.
Taillon is hanging on with a 4.47 ERA and 1.10 WHIP, but advanced stats paint a bleaker picture. His 4.38 xFIP and 42% hard-hit rate expose him as vulnerable, especially on the road where his ERA balloons to 5.56. Houston’s offense, while not the juggernaut of years past, still hits .255 as a team with a top-six contact rate. Paredes leads the charge with a .471 SLG and a 10.4% barrel rate. The Astros don’t chase much either, with a sixth-best 22.3% chase rate. That’s crucial against Taillon, whose success hinges on expanding the zone.
Valdez should own this matchup early. His curveball’s 41% whiff rate lines up perfectly against a Cubs team that struggles to elevate low breaking pitches, slugging just .341 against them. I expect Valdez to pitch deep—he’s averaging 6.4 innings per start and has gone at least five innings in 13 straight. That sets up a rested bullpen (3.12 ERA, second in MLB) to slam the door. Contrast that with a Cubs bullpen that, despite recent success, still sits 26th in win probability added over the past month.
The Astros have been excellent in run prevention over their past 10 games, holding opponents to 3.2 runs per contest. Meanwhile, the Cubs have averaged 6.3 runs over the same stretch, but their 6.31 ERA across that span exposes just how much their offense is masking pitching deficiencies.
Cubs vs. Astros pick, best bet
Jeremy Pena has posted a .322 average this season with a .378 OBP and .489 slugging percentage, showcasing consistency at the top of Houston’s lineup. Meanwhile, Kyle Tucker paces Chicago with a .291 average and .396 OBP, but his .214 career average against Valdez highlights how Houston’s ace can neutralize him. Crow-Armstrong adds power with a .544 slugging percentage and 21 homers, but he’s cooled off with a .158 average over his last seven games.
The weather is also worth factoring in. With the roof expected closed due to 95-degree heat, conditions will be stable and favor pitchers who command the zone. Valdez’s sinker-slider mix should thrive in these conditions.
Line movement supports this angle. Despite the Cubs’ offensive explosion yesterday, Houston’s moneyline ticked from -150 to -165—clear respect for Valdez. Sharps have brought it back down, and I’m locking in Astros -150 on the moneyline. The under 7.5 (-110) makes sense too given Valdez’s form and Houston’s trend of low-scoring home wins. The Cubs’ boom-or-bust profile fades against pitchers like Valdez who command the zone and kill rallies.
Best bet: Astros (-150) vs. Cubs
