Houston Astros vs. Chicago Cubs prediction, pick for Friday 6/27/25

Two first-place clubs collide tonight in Houston, and it smacks just a little of October! The Cubs storm into Daikin Park with their bats humming and momentum restored after back-to-back shutouts of the Cardinals. Across the diamond, the Astros ride a four-game heater fueled by dominant pitching that strangled the Phillies’ lineup all series. This isn’t just another interleague tilt—it’s a clash of contenders, styles, and high-octane ambition. With both teams tied at 48-33 and division leads hanging in the balance, the intensity will be palpable from first pitch. The market sees this as a coin flip. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Friday night baseball game between the Astros and the Cubs.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Astros vs. Cubs prediction, preview

Cade Horton is the type of young arm I want in this spot. His 3.73 ERA matches a 3.68 FIP, confirming the performance is real. Horton’s ground ball rate (49.2%) neutralizes Houston’s pull-heavy bats. He’s kept the ball in the park (0.88 HR/9) and limited free passes (5.7% walk rate). Houston’s lineup hits just .218 over their last six games. That’s a group scuffling for contact. Opposing hitters have posted a paltry .230 xBA against Horton this month, showing he’s suppressing quality contact consistently.

Meanwhile, Brandon Walter’s underlying numbers flash danger. The 3.80 ERA hides a 4.87 xERA. His HR/FB rate (18%) is alarming, especially against this Cubs power. Chicago ranks third in MLB with 119 home runs. They slug .445 as a unit and mash lefties to the tune of a .251 average, 32 home runs, and a .798 OPS in 718 at-bats. The Cubs’ team wRC+ against southpaws sits at 120 this month—meaning they’re producing 20% better than league average in these spots.

Seiya Suzuki is the hammer here. He’s belted 21 homers, and his xSLG sits north of .490 this month. Pete Crow-Armstrong keeps stacking barrels, riding a six-game hitting streak while posting a .868 OPS. The Cubs’ offense ranks second in MLB in runs per game (5.4) and top five in wRC+. This isn’t noise. It’s consistent, sustained production. Suzuki’s hard-hit rate over his last 50 batted balls is an elite 47%, showing how locked in he is right now.

Cubs vs. Astros pick, best bet

Houston’s home dominance jumps out, but I’m not buying it tonight. Their runs allowed is elite, sure, but the bats aren’t holding up their end—just 4.2 runs per game (20th) and a .399 SLG. Even Isaac Paredes, their power leader, is showing signs of regression with a drop in hard-hit rate this month (34% down from 42%). Houston’s team wRC+ in their last 10 games sits at just 88, well below league average, confirming the eye test.

And I’m not scared of Houston’s bullpen edge. The Cubs have seen their pen outperform projections lately, climbing into the top half of MLB in strand rate and soft contact induced. The Cubs’ bullpen has posted a 3.12 ERA across their last seven games, quietly locking down high-leverage spots. This game isn’t won on pen alone. Horton’s matchup advantage and the Cubs’ power tilt the field.

The betting market’s uncertainty here is my opportunity. Cubs’ road profile (23-18) is real. They’ve cashed in 45 of 74 Moneyline spots this year (+9.95 units). They’re 8-2 SU in their last 10 against AL West opponents. I’m locking in the Cubs on the moneyline. The offense is live. The starter has the edge.

Conditions lean Cubs too. Light winds in from right-center and no rain. That wind neutralizes Houston’s flyball-heavy attack (Paredes pulls 47% of fly balls) while doing little to stop Chicago’s line-drive heavy power bats.

Best bet: Cubs (-105) at Astros
