For the seventh consecutive year, the Rocket Classic will be played at Detroit Golf Club (par 72, 7,370 yards, bentgrass/POA annua greens) this week. There will be 156 golfers teeing it up and a top-65 and ties cut after the first two rounds.
Wyndham Clark Over 68.5 First Round Score (-150)
Wyndham Clark has had a disappointing season by his standards. The former U.S. Open champion has made 13-of-17 cuts, but he has only finished inside the top-10 once. In fact, six of his finishes have been results of T-46 or worse. Clark’s ball-striking has been his main problem. This season, he ranks 148th in SG APP of 169 qualifying golfers. Specifically, Clark has struggled on approach shots 50-125 yards out, ranking 103rd in proximity to the hole from this distance, which is a bad sign for Detroit Golf Club. Over the last five years, 30.9% of approach shots at this par 72 have come from 50-125 yards out.
Clark has played well at Detroit Golf Club in the past, finishing T-17 and T-8 in his two starts at this venue, but he has only shot under 68.5 in one of these eight rounds. Now, Clark returns to Detroit Golf Club with a first round average score of 70.0 for this season. Clark has shot over 68.5 in 11 of his 17 opening rounds this season and the 31-year-old is an excellent bet for over 68.5 for Thursday’s first round at the Rocket Classic.
