On Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Dodgers travel to the Mile High City to open a four-game series against the Colorado Rockies. With plenty of power bats and a hitter-friendly park, this one’s shaping up as a high-scoring affair — with how these two squads are playing, it likely won’t be close, either.
Here’s a Rockies vs. Dodgers prediction and pick on DraftKings Sportsbook ahead of tonight’s 8:40 p.m. EST first pitch.
Rockies vs. Dodgers prediction, preview
Colorado Rockies
Unfortunately, there’s not much to write about the Rockies’ season, at least not in the positive sense. The team’s 18-60 record remains the MLB’s worst by a decent margin… but they’ve actually come alive over the last 10 games at 5-5 in that span.
That stretch includes victories over the Braves, Giants, Nationals, and Diamondbacks. However, it seems more like a fluke than a sign of things to come. At 27th in AVG, 25th in OPS and 27th in runs, the Rockies’ offense generally has a tough time in the scoring column. Where pitching is concerned, one can give them a slight pass given the hitter-friendly conditions of Coors Field, but the staff still ranks dead-last with a 5.54 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, and the fewest strikeouts in baseball. This could be a long series against a top team.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The visiting Dodgers have no such problems. Their 48-31 record gives them the second-best record in baseball, and Los Angeles sits 7-3 across their last 10 games to boot. They did just drop a game to the Nationals a few days ago, so there may be hope for Colorado yet, though.
Upsetting this Dodgers squad remains a difficult challenge for any team, however. Los Angeles leads the MLB in basically any offensive stat you can think of, including all three slash line metrics, OPS, runs, hits and homers. It’s a recipe for fireworks on the scoreboard coming to Denver. On the flip side, Los Angeles’ pitching staff remains a bit vulnerable at 21st in ERA and 20th in WHIP with the fifth-most walks allowed. Still, they’re fifth in strikeouts as well and the pitching numbers don’t matter all that much anyways when they’re simply outscoring every other team.
Rockies vs. Dodgers pick, best bet
The odds on DraftKings Sportsbook are pretty self-explanatory as the Dodgers are a massive -281 Moneyline favorite, while the Rockies are +223 to win outright. The run total sits at 12.
Colorado’s starter German Marquez hasn’t seen much success on the campaign. The right-hander’s 6.11 ERA and 1.64 WHIP probably leave opponents salivating, especially at the thought of facing him at Coors Field. As for Los Angeles, reliever Jack Dreyer gets his fifth start of the season tonight. He’s thrown 39.2 innings this year with a 3.18 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 39 strikeouts, some very respectable numbers.
There’s a couple of ways to approach betting this contest, but both involve the Dodgers having a big night on offense. Over 6.5 hits allowed for Marquez holds some appeal at -115 odds, especially with a career-worst 11.85 H/9. Alternatively, bettors can grab over 7.5 runs for the Dodgers at -110 odds, another great pick given the matchup.
Best bet: German Marquez over 6.5 hits allowed (-115)
Slight lean: Dodgers over 7.5 runs (-110)
