Los Angeles Angels vs. Boston Red Sox prediction, pick for Monday 6/23/25

Updated:

The Red Sox roll into Angel Stadium tonight with the sting of back-to-back losses and a shaky Walker Buehler on the mound. The Angels, coming off a tight series with Houston, sense an opening to steal a win and swing some momentum their way. Both teams hover around .500 and sit just outside the wild-card hunt, and that urgency is going to spill over into every pitch. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Sunday night baseball game between the Angels and the Red Sox.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Angels vs. Red Sox prediction, preview

The Red Sox are showing cracks, and I plan to take full advantage. Boston enters this game off back-to-back losses and a bullpen implosion against San Francisco. Walker Buehler’s on the mound after one of his worst starts of the year, coughing up eight runs and looking utterly lost. His 5.95 ERA and 1.51 WHIP scream fade material. Buehler’s xFIP of 4.21 hints he’s been unlucky, sure, but those raw home-run rates (1.83 HR/9) are impossible to ignore. This Angels lineup feasts on elevated fastballs. Taylor Ward and Nolan Schanuel rank among the top 10% in hard-hit rates against right-handed four-seamers. Ward’s carrying a .466 SLG and 19 homers, while Schanuel’s hitting .300 in June. Los Angeles will jump Buehler early.

That offense doesn’t need much help against a Red Sox pen that owns a 1.11 ERA over its last 10 games but a 17th-ranked 3.91 mark for the season. Regression is lurking. Boston might not have Rafael Devers anymore, but they still lean on Jarren Duran and Ceddanne Rafaela. Duran’s riding a 117 wRC+ and a .309 OBP, and his 27 steals make him a nightmare on the basepaths. Rafaela has been red-hot too, going 6-for-14 with three homers and a 48% hard-hit rate over his last five games. Wilyer Abreu’s .253 average is serviceable, but his 13 homers have dried up for 12 straight games. Boston’s 8.3% walk rate looks tidy on paper, but their slugging percentage of .418 on the road hardly screams firepower. Trevor Story (.231, 10 HR, 38 RBI) is also scuffling; he’s walked just twice in June and is posting a sub-.300 OBP in his last 10 games.

Jack Kochanowicz keeps his name out of headlines, but he’s stable. He’s given up just two runs in each of his last two starts and is supported by a ground-ball rate north of 50%. His 4.67 xFIP and elite 50.4% grounder rate will counter Boston’s top-10 home-run rate. Jack doesn’t miss bats often, but Boston’s chase rate and mediocre contact metrics (28th in chase contact) will give him room to breathe.

Red Sox vs. Angels pick, best bet

And let’s talk bullpen edges. The Red Sox relief corps is finally showing fatigue after heavy usage, and their 0.99 WHIP over the past 10 games looks ripe for regression. The Angels pen sits 28th in ERA on the year, but they’ve posted a solid 3.00 ERA over the past 10 days. Regression is swinging back toward a level playing field.

Add in Angel Stadium’s slight park factor boost for right-handed power, the over 9.0 looks too obvious. Seven of L.A.’s last 10 home games against AL foes went over, and Boston’s last three in this park followed suit. Buehler is ripe for another blowup. Kochanowicz will fight, but Boston’s secondary bats like David Hamilton (.288 OBP, 41% hard-hit rate in June) and Carlos Narvaez (.274 average, .443 slugging) will scratch across runs.

The Angels will force Buehler into mistakes early. Kochanowicz will keep Boston off-balance just enough. The bullpen chaos on both sides will add fuel.

Best bet: Angels vs. Red Sox o9.0 total runs (-105)
