Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets prediction, pick for Sunday 6/22/25

Sunday Night Baseball brings a fired-up Mets-Phillies showdown with first place on the line, and this one is all about the lefties on the mound. David Peterson comes into this game riding a streak of dominance, boasting a 2.60 ERA and allowing just two homers in his last six starts. On the other side, Jesus Luzardo is looking to shake off a brutal stretch where he yielded 20 earned runs across two ugly outings before rebounding with a 10-strikeout gem against Chicago. The stage is set for a tense game where pitching and matchups take center stage. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Sunday night baseball game between the Phillies and the MEts.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Phillies vs. Mets prediction, preview

Peterson has been flat-out stingy this season. He owns a 1.19 WHIP and a .280 wOBA allowed, and his swinging-strike rate hovers around 11%. Left-handers simply can’t touch him, posting a miserable .174 average with virtually no power. That profile matches up perfectly against a Phillies lineup that leans on left-handed thumpers like Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. Even the right-handed bats in this Philadelphia order — Trea Turner, Alec Bohm, Nick Castellanos — will have their hands full against a southpaw who’s hitting spots and keeping hitters off balance.

Meanwhile, Luzardo is an intriguing wild card. Early in the season, he was dealing like an ace, carrying a 1.95 ERA through May with elite strikeout stuff. Even after some rough patches, the underlying numbers still jump off the page: a 28.7% K-rate last season and a 12% swinging-strike rate this year. The Phillies crush left-handed pitching — sporting a .738 OPS as a team versus southpaws — so they’re well-positioned tonight. Given Luzardo’s bounce-back showing against the Cubs and his overpowering stuff when dialed in, this looks like a good spot for him to navigate a Mets order that’s been much more mediocre against lefties (.696 OPS). Juan Soto, Brandon Nimmo, and Jeff McNeil all lose a bit of their edge against southpaws (Soto’s OPS drops from .958 vs RHP to .782 vs LHP, Nimmo’s from .827 to .701, and McNeil’s from .732 to .654), and that gives Luzardo a path to a quality start.

Both bullpens have been worked over the past two games in this series, so managers will lean on their top leverage arms tonight. Edwin Díaz (2.81 xERA, 31.1% K-rate) and José Alvarado (2.57 xFIP, 13.5 K/9) will be ready, and that plays right into a tighter, lower-scoring game script. Plus, the market’s setting this total at nine — a number that looks inflated after two straight slugfests and doesn’t reflect the difficulty left-handed pitching presents for each offense. Peterson vs. Luzardo is a different flavor entirely.

Mets vs. Phillies pick, best bet

And that’s the key angle: this game looks set up for a classic under. Both lefties have the tools to silence the big bats for at least six innings—-Peterson with a 3.89 FIP over his last five starts and a 52.1% ground-ball rate, Luzardo with a 28.7% strikeout rate and only 1.13 HR/9 allowed. The bullpens will be focused and fully loaded—the Phillies’ relievers rank top-5 in strand rate at 78.6%, and the Mets’ back-end has a 3.35 SIERA this past month—and these two offenses can’t lean on the same home-run derby they enjoyed the last two nights. Factor in the pressure of a primetime divisional game and you have all the ingredients for a slow-burn affair. The Phillies have played under the total in five of their last seven against left-handed starters at home, and this fits that profile perfectly.

My read? Hammer the under 9.0 runs tonight. The public will look at last night’s fireworks and see two dangerous lineups. But the sharp side knows better—Peterson and Luzardo have the stuff to control the narrative early, the platoon splits heavily favor the pitchers, and the back-end relievers will lock it down late. Trust the arms to take center stage and let this one cruise under with confidence. It’s a sharp, disciplined play that matches the numbers and the moment.

Best bet: Phillies vs. Mets u9.0 total runs (-105)
