Adley Rutschman injury update: Orioles catcher headed to IL

Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman was scratched ahead of yesterday’s game against the New York Yankees due to abdominal tightness. After undergoing an MRI this morning, the young star will spend 10 days on the IL with an oblique issue.

The 27-year-old is in the midst of a down year, slashing just .227/.319/.372 with a career-low .691 OPS. Ideally, the IL stint provides a much-needed break for Rutschman to reset and get back on track for the remainder of the season.

In the meantime, Maverick Handley and Gary Sanchez take over at the catcher spot. Sanchez drew the start in yesterday’s win over the Yankees, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a run, and a walk.

It’s been far from the campaign the Orioles imagined as well. The team sits 33-42 on the year as they attempt to claw their way out of last place in the AL East. At 7-3 across their last 10 games with a 12-6 record in June, there’s some hope Baltimore can pull things together down the second half of the season.
