TThe Cleveland Guardians are set to face the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park, and let me tell you—the stakes couldn’t be higher. The Giants, reeling from a three-game losing streak to welcome their new star Rafael Devers, need a rebound in front of their home crowd. Meanwhile, the Guardians, fresh off a 3-2 victory in Game 1, are out to prove their win wasn’t a fluke. With Justin Verlander returning from injury, the pitching duel between him and Logan Allen offers a fascinating dynamic. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Wednesday night baseball game between the Giants and Guardians.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Giants vs. Guardians prediction, preview
The Giants have been anything but consistent offensively. Despite a solid 4.3 runs per game, they rank 22nd in the league with just 70 home runs this season. Heliot Ramos has been one of the Giants’ brightest spots, sporting a .284 average and a .465 slugging percentage. However, his .328 xwOBA against left-handed pitching suggests he might be vulnerable against Allen’s slider-heavy arsenal. Verlander may not be the ace he once was, but he’s still a threat. In his last six starts, he posted a respectable 3.24 ERA. He’s also historically been strong against Cleveland, with a career 4.42 ERA in 57 starts.
Even more telling: the Guardians rank 25th in runs scored (3.8 per game) and are slashing .231/.303/.374, which is about as uninspiring as it gets. José Ramírez has been the lone bright spot for Cleveland, slashing .319 with a .543 SLG and 13 home runs. However, his .336 xSLG in his last 30 days indicates he’s due for some regression, and he’s facing a Verlander who’s been able to neutralize left-handed power hitters. Add to that their recent struggles against right-handed pitchers—posting a .559 OPS and a 62 wRC+ in the last 10 days—and you’ve got an offense primed to struggle against a Verlander returning to form.
On the flip side, Logan Allen has been inconsistent, but he’s facing a Giants team that ranks 24th in slugging percentage (.376) and is 22nd in batting average (.233). However, Wilmer Flores has been surprisingly effective against lefties this season, holding a .319 wOBA and a .459 xSLG against southpaws. Still, he’s been a bit quiet in his last 50 plate appearances, posting a 27% strikeout rate, which plays right into Allen’s ability to generate weak contact with his sinker.
The Guardians might not have an explosive offense, but Allen has been good at limiting hard contact, even if his strikeout rate leaves a lot to be desired. Steven Kwan, hitting .298 with a .361 OBP, has been one of the Guardians’ most consistent hitters, but his 32.3% chase rate and lack of power—just a .407 SLG—will make him an easy target for Verlander’s well-placed breaking balls. And let’s not forget that the Giants are dead last in the majors when facing left-handed pitching in recent days, putting Allen in a prime spot to keep the game within reach.
Guardians vs. Giants pick, best bet
Looking at recent trends, both teams are hitting the under frequently. The Guardians have gone under in 21 of their last 34 games, while the Giants have cashed the under in 23 of their last 38. The forecast at Oracle Park doesn’t help either—the marine layer and cool temperatures make it one of the toughest parks for hitters, and with both pitchers getting the ball tonight, I expect more of the same.
Defensively, San Francisco’s bullpen ranks in the top tier, which should give them the edge late in the game. But it’s the Guardians’ ability to grind out close games that could keep this one tight. The Giants are 10-3 at home when facing teams with a .330 OBP or lower, a trend that suggests they’re more than capable of handling a weak Cleveland lineup in a low-scoring affair.
Ultimately, while both teams have their strengths, the offenses don’t inspire enough confidence to expect a high-scoring game. Take the under 8.0 with confidence—this one won’t hit double digits.
Best bet: Giants vs. Guardians u8.0 runs (-120)
