Golf Best Bets: Top 3-Ball Picks for the Travelers Championship

The PGA TOUR is in Connecticut for the final Signature Event of the season at TPC River Highlands. Since it’s a Signature Event, the limited field of 72 players will all play four rounds at this no-cut event, barring withdrawal or disqualification. One way to get a great tournament-long sweat, without having to pick the winner, is by playing some of the Tournament Trio groups available on DraftKings Sportsbook. These groups of three are a great way to find the “sweet spot” that balances risk and reward.

The format of 3-ball picks is simple to understand—three golfers are placed in a group and you select the winner from that group for the tournament. You can find the eight trios for this week in the tournament groups section of the Travelers Championship page.

With plenty of course history to consider and lots of recent form for most players heading into the summer, it’s a great week to find some winners to build your bankroll from these tournament trios. With three players in the group, almost all options come at plus-money odds.

Viktor Hovland (+160)

Hovland is a slight favorite in this trio with Sam Burns (+165) and last week’s U.S. Open champ J.J. Spaun (+185). Hovland finished third behind Spaun last week, and his game has been trending up over the last couple of months. He also has a stronger history at this course than the other two options in this trio.

Vik has played the Travelers four times in his career with top 30 finishes in each of his last three tries. He finished T11 in 2020 when it was a full-field event and posted a T20 last year, when he closed with a 64-65 on the weekend. Hovland came up just short last week, finishing T3 at Oakmont. He led the field in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green, which used to be one of his weaknesses. That could be a sign of big things to come if the rest of his game stays strong and he adds better short-game play.

He ranks fifth in the field in Strokes Gained: Approach and 13th in Total Strokes Gained over his last 30 rounds, and he has finished in the top 30 in six of his last seven events dating back to his first win of the season at the Valspar Championship.

Burns has also been playing well, but he missed the cut at this event in 2022, didn’t play in 2023 and finished T55 in 2024 when it was a no-cut event. His recent form is strong, but he hasn’t historically been as good a fit here as Hovland.

Spaun also has excellent form, obviously, after his win last week, but he could definitely still be sluggish after the win. Spaun missed the cut in three of his last four trips here, with his only made cut a T47 in 2021.

Robert MacIntyre (+180)

Bobby Mac is in a nice international trio with Shane Lowry (+160) and Ben Griffin (+180). He’s by far my favorite of the three this week, especially since TPC River Highlands has played so well for left-handed golfers like Bubba Watson and Brian Harman.

MacIntyre has good momentum coming to the Travelers after finishing runner-up last week behind Spaun. He’s made the cut in 14 of his 16 PGA TOUR events this season and has posted seven top 25 finishes, including three in his last four tournaments. Over those four tournaments, he ranks fifth in the field in Total Strokes Gained and sixth in Strokes Gained: Approach. Last week, his flat stick heated up, as well, and he ranked fourth in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting.

Last year, he made his debut at TPC River Highlands and finished T16.

While Bobby Mac was posting a near miss at the U.S. Open, Lowry exploded and missed the cut with a pair of ugly rounds. He was in great form before the event, so it was uncharacteristic for him to struggle so badly, especially at a major championship. He has a pair of top 20 finishes at this track in his last two visits and definitely has bounce-back potential, but I think MacIntyre is a stronger play, especially since he has longer odds than Lowry.

Griffin is the third member of this trio. He is playing this event for the third time but missed the cut in 2023 and finished 67th last year. To be fair, he’s playing on a whole different level than he was earlier in his career, and has won twice with another runner-up finish in his last seven events. He finished T10 last week at Oakmont and will look to keep it rolling this week.

Even though Griffin has been running hot and Lowry has strong long-term form, MacIntyre’s form from last week and how well his game fits the track earns him this spot in my golf best bets for the Travelers.

Cameron Young (+175)

This week, Young will is in a tournament trio with Jordan Spieth (+165) and Aaron Rai (+180). While he continues to search for his first tournament win, Young has outperformed Spieth and Rai lately, and he also has a solid history at this track. He’s widely considered as one of the most accomplished PGA TOUR players still without a win, but whether this is the week he fixes that problem or not, he has a good shot to emerge with the win in this trio.

Young is coming off back-to-back T3 finishes at the RBC Canadian Open and the U.S. Open. He also had a T25 at the Memorial and a T7 at the Truist Championship in his previous two Signature Events.

Young made waves at this event last season with a 59 in Round 3 and ended up T9 after a closing 66 on Sunday. He’ll look to build on that success last year and put together another great showing this week, maybe even sneaking into the Winner’s Circle for the first time.

Both of the other players in this trio already have PGA TOUR victories, and Spieth even won at this event. However, that win came back in 2017, and he has not finished in the top 50 in his last four trips to TPC River Highlands, including a T63 finish last season in the no-cut format. Spieth does come back with some solid form, though, after finishing T7 at the Memorial and T23 at the U.S. Open last week. Still, his recent course history makes him tricky to trust as the favorite in this trio.

Rai has better recent course history with a T40 and T24 in his two visits to this track over the last three years, but he comes in with rough recent form. He missed the cut at both the Charles Schwab Challenge and the Memorial before finishing T33 last week at Oakmont.

Rai and Spieth are both volatile options, but I’ll take Young’s consistency and his course history for the third pick in my golf best bets for this week.
