In what still seems like a fever dream, Rafael Devers will make his debut for the Giants this evening, roughy 48 hours after a shocking blockbuster trade from the Red Sox. It is currently unclear where Devers will play for San Francisco, though in a hilarious bit of irony, it is worth noting that third base is open with Matt Chapman (hand) on the 10-day IL. Will Bob Melvin do the funniest thing?

We don’t always get a storybook beginning to a new relationship, but I do truly believe that Devers is in for a huge night on Tuesday. Most of that has to do with the man himself. Devers has been red-hot since the beginning of May, slashing .309/.439/.559 with a .250 ISO and a 174 wRC+ in that 41-game span. If you need a larger sample, look no further than the fact that Devers owns a career .910 OPS against RHPs. He’s an elite hitter. His bat certainly wasn’t the reason the Red Sox dealt him across the country, yet it is definitely the reason the Giants were willing to pick up his massive contract.
This is an amazing matchup, too. Slade Cecconi has struggled in his five starts with the Guardians, registering a robust 5.87 xERA in his 25.1 innings of work. The home run ball has been Cecconi’s largest nemesis, as the 25-year-old has surrendered 2.13 per nine so far this season. Cecconi is also giving up a .551 slugging percentage and a .383 wOBA to the 53 LHBs he’s seen with Cleveland. Devers, one of MLB’s best lefties, should be able to take advantage.
