The Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles meet tonight in what promises to be a thrilling AL East showdown at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Tampa Bay’s offense has been cruising, but it’s their ace on the mound, Ryan Pepiot, who will need to silence a potent Orioles lineup. With both teams in solid recent form, below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Monday night baseball game between the Mariners and the Red Sox.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Rays vs. Orioles prediction, preview
Ryan Pepiot (3-6, 3.31 ERA) has been a quiet star for the Rays. While his record doesn’t scream dominance, his advanced metrics do. His 3.94 xFIP ranks him among the top pitchers in the game when factoring in defense-independent stats, highlighting his control and strikeout ability. Pepiot’s 9.5 K/9 rate and 1.14 WHIP are elite, and his strikeouts have been particularly effective against right-handed batters, which plays perfectly into Tampa’s game plan tonight. Though his home run rate (1.43 HR/9) is a concern, the Orioles’ fly-ball heavy hitters, like Cedric Mullins and Ryan O’Hearn, tend to struggle against ground ball pitchers. Pepiot’s ability to limit damage and avoid explosive innings should be the difference-maker here.
On the flip side, Zach Eflin (6-2, 4.08 ERA) has been steady for Baltimore, but his numbers aren’t as impressive as they seem at first glance. Eflin’s 4.80 ERA over the last month is concerning, especially considering his 5.51 FIP, which indicates his underlying metrics are much worse than his ERA suggests. He’s been prone to home runs (1.70 HR/9), which is a red flag against a Rays team that has slugged 74 home runs this season, ranking them in the top half of MLB. Eflin will need to keep the ball down, but he struggles against left-handed batters, a problem when facing the likes of Junior Caminero, Brandon Lowe, and Jonathan Aranda, all of whom have shown above-average power against right-handed pitchers this year.
Orioles vs. Rays pick, best bet
Recent form for both teams makes this matchup even more intriguing. The Rays have won seven of their last 10, including a dominant sweep of the Mets. They’ve been particularly strong at home, winning six of their last seven at Steinbrenner Field. Meanwhile, the Orioles have been solid, winning four of their last five, but their success has come against weaker competition. Against high-quality opponents like Tampa Bay, they’ve struggled to maintain consistency, especially with their bullpen, which ranks a concerning 24th in ERA (4.54). Tampa’s bullpen, however, sits near the top, ranked second in ERA (3.05) and has consistently shut down opposition late in games.
When we look at betting insights, the Rays come into this game as slight favorites at -112 on the moneyline, and their 5-1 record in their last six home games against teams with a losing record should give bettors confidence. The Orioles’ 4-9 record on the road against teams with a winning record shows that they struggle to close out these games, especially when facing a bullpen like Tampa Bay’s.
The Rays’ offensive consistency and pitching edge make them the clear pick here. Despite Eflin’s solid surface numbers, his underlying stats are concerning, and Pepiot’s strikeouts and ability to limit big innings will stifle the Orioles’ power hitters. Add in Tampa’s superior bullpen and home-field advantage, and it’s clear they’re poised to take this one.
Best bet: Rays (-110) vs. Orioles
