With a matchup like this, where the Seattle Mariners meet the Arizona Diamondbacks, it’s all about the right edge. Both teams have shown flashes of brilliance early on, but have been plagued by untimely ruts. Arizona’s offense is potent, ranked third in MLB for home runs (96) and fourth for runs (341), but they’ve been shaky on the mound, sitting 25th in ERA (4.81). Conversely, Seattle, led by Bryan Woo, has a strong pitching staff, ranking 19th in ERA (4.04), but their offense has been inconsistent, struggling to capitalize on Woo’s solid outings. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Wednesday night baseball game between the Diamondbacks and the Mariners.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Diamondbacks vs. Mariners prediction, preview
Eduardo Rodriguez gets the nod for the Diamondbacks. His 6.70 ERA this season speaks volumes about his struggles, with a 1.65 WHIP and opponents hitting .308 against him. He’s been all over the place, allowing a league-high .636 slugging percentage on low non-fastballs. His inability to escape innings has put immense pressure on the bullpen. His strikeout rate is decent (10.0 K/9), but he’s allowing too much hard contact. His 7.64 ERA in his last five starts exemplifies his lack of control, as batters have posted a .353 BA in 68 at-bats against him. Even with a home game, his ERA balloons to 6.91 at Chase Field, making him a liability.
Meanwhile, Woo’s 3.07 ERA is solid, and his 0.96 WHIP reflects his dominance. His 104 Stuff+ rating and 111 Location+ indicate his elite command and ability to generate swings and misses. Woo’s control is his biggest asset, walking only 11 batters all season. Yet, he’s also struggled recently, with a 4.18 ERA over his last five starts. Seattle has lost three of those five games. Woo’s road performance has been steady but not stellar, with a 3.45 ERA in seven starts. His 0.96 WHIP against right-handed hitters showcases his ability to neutralize power, limiting batters to a .215 BAA.
Looking at recent form, Arizona has found their stride, winning five of the last eight games. They’ve dominated at home, and their offense is firing on all cylinders, ranking 4th in runs per game (5.1). Their 14.6% Barrel rate ranks them third in MLB, showing their ability to hit for power. They’ve shown resilience after a tough loss streak, especially with key hitters like Corbin Carroll (19 HRs) and Josh Naylor (.297 avg). Rodriguez, however, faces a daunting task, trying to handle a lineup that ranks 3rd in slugging percentage (.449) and has plenty of power.
The Mariners have been struggling in June, winning just two of their last 10. The inconsistency is evident, as they’ve dropped seven of their last eight games, and their offense has failed to break through. Cal Raleigh has been excellent (26 HRs), but Julio Rodriguez has cooled off significantly. This struggle in the lineup has been compounded by their weak bullpen, which ranks 19th in ERA (4.10) and 22nd in FIP (4.14). Its 1.38 WHIP stinks, too, allowing plenty of base runners in tight spots, which only adds to the pressure Woo will face late in the game.
Mariners vs. Diamondbacks pick, best bet
Betting insights show Seattle’s woes on the road (1-6 in their last seven as road favorites) and their inability to cover the run line (2-8 in their last 10). Arizona, conversely, is 6-3 against the spread in their last nine, and their offense has been more reliable recently. With Rodriguez on the mound, Arizona will have the advantage, especially considering Woo’s recent struggles and Seattle’s overall form.
The betting trends point to a high-scoring game, with nine of Seattle’s last 10 games as favorites going over the total. Arizona’s recent games have leaned toward the over as well, hitting in six of their last seven home games. With both offenses capable of putting up runs and shaky pitching on both sides, I’m confidently taking the over here. The offenses should light up the scoreboard against these struggling pitchers.
Best bet: Diamondbacks vs. Mariners o9.5 total runs (-105)
