The U.S. Open is being played at Oakmont Country Club outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The U.S. Open is the third major of the year, with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler winning the first two majors of the season. Oakmont is a par 70 golf course and ranges 7,431 yards. It is one of the most difficult golf courses in the world, with very high scores winning here in the past. The poa annua greens and brutally thick rough make it a great challenge for the world’s best golfers. The two best players in the world, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, won the first two majors of the year and will want to win this one as well. However, defending U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau will be tough to beat at Oakmont as well. It should be a great battle in brutal conditions among the world’s best players.
Scottie Scheffler to Win Wire-to-Wire (+1800)
Scottie Scheffler had surgery earlier this season, which caused him to have a slow start to the year. He missed some tournaments and didn’t get a win until May. Now, a slow start for Scottie Scheffler is different than a slow start for everyone else. He had his B-game at Augusta National and still finished fourth at The Masters. He has finished inside the top-25 at every tournament he has played in this year, and has nine top-10 finishes in 12 starts. Since the start of May, Scheffler has taken his game to a whole new level. He won THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson while preparing for the season’s second major. That tune-up worked wonders, as he won the PGA Championship the following week. He followed that up with a T-4 at the Charles Schwab Challenge and then won a Signature Event, the Memorial Tournament, in his most recent start. So, over his last four events, Scheffler has three wins. If he is playing his best golf, no other golfer in the world can touch him at the moment.
Scheffler is a remarkable +275 to win the U.S. Open. Rarely does a golfer have odds that low to win a tournament, let alone when he is in a field full of all of the best players in the world. It is hard to bet on Scheffler at that price due to the low odds. However, my favorite bet is on Scheffler to win wire-to-wire. For that bet to win, Scheffler needs to lead at the end of all four rounds. The hardest part of this bet is for Scheffler to lead after the first round. In a one-round sample size, a random player could have a better round. However, if Scheffler gets out to a hot start and leads after round one, he should be able to keep his foot on the gas and outlast. Scheffler currently ranks first on the PGA TOUR in strokes gained total, strokes gained off the tee, strokes gained on approach and scoring average. He also ranks second in scrambling and fifth in scrambling from the rough, essential metrics for success at Oakmont. If you want to back Scheffler in the U.S. Open, it is worth taking a shot on a wire-to-wire win.
