The 125th U.S. Open will be played at Oakmont Country Club (par 70, 7,372 yards, POA annua greens) in Oakmont, Pennsylvania this week. This course last hosted the U.S. Open in 2016, when Dustin Johnson (-4) won by three strokes. There will be 156 golfers teeing it up this week and after the second round, there will be a top-60 and ties cut.
Below, I have featured some finishing position bets to consider for the U.S. Open.
Jordan Spieth for a top-30 finish including ties (+105)
Spieth impressed at the Memorial Tournament in his last start, finishing T7th at the Signature Event. In the tough conditions at Muirfield Village, the three-time major champion shot even par or better in three of his four rounds, including a 3-under 69 in the second round, and Spieth gained strokes in every major category for the tournament.
This season, Spieth has made 12-of-14 cuts and seven of these finishes have come inside the top-30. The former Texas Longhorn finished T37th at Oakmont in 2016, but Spieth is a better driver of the golf ball nowadays, setting him up well for the long Oakmont. This season, Spieth’s driver has been his best club with the veteran ranking 23rd in SG OTT. Additionally, the 31-year-old ranks 35th in par four performance which is also a great sign for Oakmont, which is a traditional par 70 with 12 par fours. When Johnson won the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont, he led his field in par four efficiency.
Spieth has carded four top-25 finishes in 13 starts at the U.S. Open — including a win at Chambers Bay in 2015 — and is a very appealing bet for a top-30 finish this week at this plus-money price on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Adam Scott for a top-40 finish (+125)
Scott has been consistent at the U.S. Open throughout his career. The Australian finished T18th at Oakmont in 2016 and finished T32nd at Pinehurst No. 2 last season, which are just two of his 13 top-40 finishes in 23 starts at the U.S. Open.
Scott returns to Oakmont this week with a 9-of-11 record in terms of made cuts this season. Seven of these finishes have been top-40 results, including a T19 at last month’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, which much like Oakmont is a long course that features poa greens.
Scott has gained at least 2.0 strokes OTT at three consecutive events. If the savvy veteran can manage just an average performance with his putter to combine with his excellent ball striking, Scott should comfortably finish inside the top-40 this week.
