Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays prediction, pick for Monday 6/9/25

The Tampa Bay Rays will face the Boston Red Sox in what promises to be a tense AL East showdown. Both teams bring intriguing stories to this matchup, but when it comes down to raw stats and recent trends, there’s a clear lean. The Red Sox, however, are hovering just a bit off the ground after stealing two in the Bronx against their first series against the Yankees. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Monday night baseball game between the Red Sox and the Rays.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Red Sox vs. Rays prediction, preview

Looking at the pitching matchup, Shane Baz (5-3, 4.96 ERA) takes the mound for the Rays. His numbers this season aren’t eye-popping, but his recent form—combined with Tampa Bay’s bullpen ranking 4th in MLB with a 3.52 ERA—gives him a clear edge over Brayan Bello (2-1, 3.91 ERA). Bello has shown flashes of the potential Boston loves, but he struggles to consistently go deep into games. In fact, he’s exceeded five innings in just two of his last seven starts, which doesn’t inspire confidence against an offense as potent as Tampa Bay’s.

Baz has allowed a 23.6% strikeout rate and a 5.73 K/BB ratio this season, while Bello’s 5.71 xERA and 4.81 FIP suggest that he may be due for some regression in this start. I’m expecting Baz to keep the Red Sox lineup, which has a 4.10 team ERA (22nd in MLB), in check, especially given that the Rays’ starting rotation has been solid overall.

The Rays’ offense has been firing on all cylinders lately, ranking 12th in MLB in runs scored (4.44 per game), while their slugging percentage has held steady at .394. Key hitters like Junior Caminero (15 HR, 40 RBI) and Yandy Diaz (nine HR, 36 RBI) have been playing at an elite level, and I see them continuing to punish a Red Sox staff that’s giving up 4.64 runs per game. Caminero ranks 12th in the league in home runs, and Diaz is 43rd in RBIs, providing the middle-of-the-order production Tampa Bay needs. This is especially important when considering how the Red Sox have struggled at home, allowing an average of 5.14 runs in their last six games at Fenway. Tampa Bay’s offense has posted a .325 wOBA against right-handed pitchers this season, ranking 15th in MLB, but it’s the consistency of their power hitters like Caminero and Diaz that has set them apart. When you factor in that Tampa Bay has won seven of the last 10 games at Fenway Park, their dominance at this venue is clear.

Boston, on the other hand, has been flat and inconsistent, and their recent form isn’t ideal. Despite ranking sixth in the league in runs scored (4.83 per game), they’ve had trouble against quality right-handed pitching like Baz. Their lineup, which boasts big names like Rafael Devers (14 HR, 57 RBI), is still potent, but they’ve been stymied by righties with better command. Devers holds a 50.1% hard-hit rate this season, and while his .366 wOBA against right-handed pitchers is impressive, he’s been less effective against fastball-heavy pitchers like Baz. I expect Baz to exploit this mismatch and keep Boston’s offense from going off.

Rays vs. Red Sox pick, best bet

The Rays have the upper hand in both bullpen performance and overall momentum. While the Red Sox have shown they can be dangerous, especially at home, their recent trend of struggling against teams that have solid pitching, coupled with their own bullpen issues, leads me to believe the Rays will come out on top in this matchup.

In terms of betting trends, the Rays have covered the run line in seven of their last 10 games against AL East opponents, and I don’t see them dropping the ball here. Their ability to keep pressure on the Red Sox offense—combined with their own offensive firepower—should make them too much to handle in this one.

So! It’s Tampa Bay as slight dogs on the Moneyline. for me I expect them to come through in this matchup, leveraging their superior pitching depth, consistent offense, and recent form. The Red Sox may make it close, but I don’t see them getting past Baz and a Rays team that’s been hitting its stride.

Best bet: Rays (-105) at Red Sox

Rays will soon own the AL East—Tail it with me in the DKN Betting Group here!
