The French Open Women’s Singles Final is setting up to be a heavyweight clash. There were some amazing Cinderella runs on the women’s side of the French Open, and some great matches between top players along the way. However, after all that, the Final will feature the top two players in the world. The world’s No. 1 player, Aryna Sabalenka, has torn through this tournament. In six matches, she has only dropped one set, and that came against defending champion Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. Even then, Sabalenka could not have been more convincing, demolishing the former world No. 1 6-0 in the third set. Sabalenka seems like an unstoppable force as she looks to win her fourth Grand Slam title.
American superstar Coco Gauff, the second-ranked player in the world, will try to stop Sabalenka on Saturday. Gauff is looking to win her second career Grand Slam singles title, the first being the 2023 US Open. Other than that US Open victory, the 2022 French Open Final is Gauff’s only other Grand Slam Final appearance. She has always performed well in this tournament, making it to the semifinals in singles and winning the French Open Women’s Doubles title last year. Gauff ended the 2024 season on a strong note, winning the WTA Finals. She then helped the United States win the United Cup at the start of 2025 by beating Iga Swiatek in straight sets. Heading into the French Open, her form continued to improve, making it to back-to-back finals in the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. A French Open title would be a fitting reward for the great tennis that Gauff has been playing this year, but Aryna Sabalenka will not make it easy on her.
Sabalenka vs. Gauff pick, best bet
In their careers, Gauff and Sabalenka have met ten times. They have evenly split those matches, winning five a piece. The two most recently met in the Madrid Open Final, just over a month ago. Sabalenka won that match and, along with it, the Madrid Open. She took care of Gauff in straight sets, with the second set going to a tiebreaker. Gauff did pull off the upset over Sabalenka at the end of 2024 in the semifinals of the WTA Finals. Gauff has defeated Sabalenka on clay before, but that dates all the way back to the 2021 Italian Open in the Round of 16. Sabalenka undoubtedly has the upper hand going into this match, but Gauff has shown she is capable of beating Sabalenka in big matches in the past.
The good news for Gauff is that this is not like going against Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros when she was the No. 1 player in the world. Sabalenka is easily the best player in the world, but she is not a clay specialist in the way that Swiatek is. Prior to this year, Sabalenka had never made a French Open Final. The biggest key to this match is Coco Gauff’s serve. Sabalenka has one of the most dominant serves in the world at the moment, and Gauff needs to try to match her. When Gauff’s first serve is firing, she is very hard to beat. However, Gauff goes through stretches of struggling with her serve, and she can’t afford that against Sabalenka. If Gauff is consistently hitting second serves, Sabalenka will be able to fire winners back against Gauff.
This should be a great match between these two amazing players. However, Sabalenka seems to have a different gear at the moment that Gauff can’t reach. If Gauff goes on a hot run with her serve at some point in the match and forces a lot of backhand-to-backhand rallies, she could break Sabalenka and win a set. However, if this goes to a deciding third set, Sabalenka should be able to lock in and win the title. She showed that poise and intensity in the third set against Swiatek, and this match could look similar to that one.
