Chicago Cubs over 2.5 runs through first five innings -115
Jake Irvin starts for the Nationals tonight, carrying a 3.93 ERA, a 5.09 xERA, and a 4.42 FIP. His expected regression was evident in his last outing, when the Diamondbacks scored six runs on 10 hits in five innings. The Cubs, a tough matchup, will field a lineup heavy with left-handed hitters—Irvin’s weakness, shown by a .344 wOBA, a 4.77 FIP, and seven of his 10 allowed home runs. Teams often attack Irvin early, as he posts a 5.19 ERA, a 5.00 FIP, and 15 of his 32 allowed runs in the first time through the order.
Jeremy Pena 2+ total bases +100
Peña’s having a breakout season, thriving since shifting to the leadoff spot. Over 34 games as the leadoff hitter, he’s slashing .358/.411/.555 with a .419 wOBA. This sets him up well against Pirates starter Mitch Keller tonight. Keller leans on four-seam fastballs and sinkers, pitches Peña crushes with at least a .422 wOBA this season. Peña has notched at least two total bases in half his leadoff starts. With his edge against Keller’s main pitches, I’m looking to cash this bet at +100
Slade Cecconi under 14.5 outs recorded +120
This out total is low, but I expect Cecconi to fall short of it. In his three starts this season, he’s posted a 5.28 ERA, with a 6.61 xERA and a 6.07 FIP. Home runs are a major issue, with five allowed, translating to a 2.9 HR/9. That’s a costly weakness against the Yankees’ lineup. Hitters from both sides have hit him hard over his three-year career, particularly righties, who’ve tagged him for a .375 wOBA and a 5.01 FIP. I doubt he’ll last five innings tonight.
