The English Premier League just finished their season a couple weeks ago and teams are already deep into a flurry of transfer window activity. Of course, Manchester United remain a key player for a handful of stars.
As rumors have swirled in recent days surrounding the club’s interest in star midfielder Bryan Mbeumo, new reporting from The Athletic’s David Ornstein says United have made an opening offer for the Brentford talent.
A potential transfer for the 25-year-old would likely draw a higher fee than the reported £55 million offer.
Mbeumo notched 27 goal involvements for Brentford in 38 matches this past season, tied for fourth-best in the Premier League. He’s a fantastic threat on offense and one of the best penalty shooters in the sport. While not an elite playmaker, he arguably underperformed his 9.26 expected assists with just seven last season. Plus, his ability to play up as a true striker or on the wing brings a hint of versatility to his game.
United already made a splash early in the transfer window by signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves, a massive add heading into next season. While Bruno Fernandes’ future with the club remains uncertain, Cunha brings plenty of offensive firepower up front himself. If the team can acquire Mbeumo’s services, that pairing surely will form one of the most formidable duos in the Premier League.
After finishing 15th in the Prem table this past year with 42 points (11-9-18), the team certainly needs all the help it can get to regain their form as a true competitor in not only their league, but higher-level football. The Cunha signing is merely the first step, but it does reflect well on the club’s reputation since they were able to bring in a star despite the down season — they’ll hope to accomplish the same with Mbeumo heading into the coming days of negotiation.
