On paper, Tigers vs. White Sox is a battle between an unstoppable object and an incredibly moveable force. Detroit owns the American League’s best record (40-22) while Chicago is the laughingstock of the Junior Circuit (19-42). However, games aren’t played on paper. When these teams met on Tuesday, the White Sox came out on top with a dominant 8-1 victory. Can Detroit get back on track tonight, or will Chicago pick up its second straight win? Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Wednesday night battle between the Tigers and White Sox.
Detroit enters tonight as favorites (-218) over Chicago, with the over/under set at 8 runs. Let’s break down which side has the edge on DraftKings Sportsbook going into Wednesday’s contest.
Tigers at White Sox prediction, preview
Tonight’s pitching matchup is filled with question marks on both sides. Detroit will welcome back Sawyer Gipson-Long, making his first start of the season. Wednesday marks the right-hander’s first major league appearance since September of 2023, a 615-day absence due to elbow and hip surgeries. The 25-year-old doesn’t have an extensive track record, having thrown 20.0 innings in his career. However, he looked good during that brief sample size, posting a 2.70 ERA and 26 strikeouts.
For the South Siders, it’ll be Jared Shuster getting the nod. The former Braves hurler has been awful to start 2025, logging a 6.14 ERA. However, he did have a much lower mark of 4.34 last season, which is terrific by 2024 White Sox standards. In all four of the lefty’s career appearances against the Tigers, he’s allowed at least one earned run. It’s likely that Chicago put several different arms on the mound tonight. Unfortunately for the White Sox, their relievers have accounted for the seventh-highest bullpen ERA in baseball (4.60).
Surprisingly, Chicago enters Wednesday as the hotter lineup. Since May 21st, the White Sox rank 14th in runs scored (51) and tenth in OPS (.723). In comparison, the Tigers are 18th (48) and 20th (.657) in those two categories. To be fair, that’s due in part to Detroit’s recent schedule. Games against the Royals, Giants, Cardinals and Guardians aren’t conducive to offensive success. On Monday, the Tigers shellacked Chicago en route to 13 runs. As previously mentioned, they followed that up the next night with just one run. Which performance is more emblematic of the ‘real’ Detroit offense? The answer is likely somewhere in the middle.
Tigers at White Sox pick, best bet
When breaking down recent history between these division rivals, the answer should be obvious. The Tigers have won four of their five games against the White Sox this season. In addition, most of their meetings haven’t been close. However, there’s a real unknown factor with Gipson-Long. A stellar outing isn’t out of the question, but pitching after a long layoff is never easy. On the flip side, Chicago’s relievers cannot be trusted. A heavy dose of scoring in the Windy City feels like the safest bet on the board tonight.
Best Bet: Tigers White Sox over 8 runs (-118)
Even if it ends in a Detroit blowout, both sides pitching well feels unlikely tonight. Four of the last five games between these two have gone over eight runs; tonight makes it five of six.
