The dream matchup for tennis fans has come to fruition in the Women’s Singles Semifinals of the French Open. Former #1 player in the world and defending French Open champion, Iga Swiatek, will take on current world #1 Aryna Sabalenka for a spot in the French Open Final. The winner of this match will likely take on the American superstar Coco Gauff in the Final, as Gauff is an overwhelming favorite against Lois Boisson in the other semifinal. Sabalenka and Swiatek have a rich history facing off against each other over the years, and a sometimes complicated relationship off the court. These two are always a fascinating matchup because of their different styles. Sabalenka has incredible power and the hardest first serve to return in women’s tennis. Meanwhile, Swiatek can hit every shot on the court and rarely makes unforced errors. It is a true battle of power versus precision.
These two have met 12 times before in their careers, but somehow never in a Grand Slam final. That trend will continue this year, as Swiatek slipped a bit in the rankings this spring, making this a semifinal instead of a potential French Open Final match. This epic semifinal clash is a battle of current form versus history on clay. Sabalenka overtook Swiatek as the world’s #1 player at the 2023 US Open and has refused to give it up. She won two of the four Grand Slam titles in 2024 and reached the final of the Australian Open earlier this year. She has also dominated this tournament so far, not dropping a single set up to this point. Meanwhile, Swiatek is now the fifth-ranked woman in the world, her lowest world ranking since March of 2022. She lost to Sabalenka in the Cincinnati Open the last time they faced off in late 2024. She also failed to defend her titles at the Madrid Open and Italian Open, exiting the latter in the third round.
Despite Swiatek’s poor run of form, by her standards, this could be the turning point in her getting back to the top of the sport. Swiatek looked doomed in the fourth round after losing the first set and trailing 2-0 in the second set against the dangerous Elena Rybakina. However, Swiatek recovered that match from nowhere and seemingly found her elite form on clay once again. Swiatek went on to dominate a great player, Elina Svitolina, in the quarterfinals to reach this match. While Sabalenka has been brilliant all tournament, this will be by far her toughest test so far. Swiatek has dominated her on clay throughout their careers and that will certainly be in her head.
One fault you could put on the best women’s tennis player in the world is that she can get too frustrated with herself at times and self-destruct. Sabalenka’s mental game has gotten much better over the past couple of years compared to earlier in her career, but Swiatek knows exactly how to push her buttons. Swiatek is the more composed player and could use her winning experience at Roland Garros to win the key points of the match that will make the difference between winning and losing. It should be an incredible match between these two as they add another chapter to their historic rivalry. However, it is impossible to pass up the chance to bet on Iga Swiatek, the Queen of Clay, at plus-money at Roland Garros.
